I was given an old iphone, not sure if it is an iphone3 or 3gs, however I just want to put a few games on it for my son and some music and let it be like an ipod touch, however i was messing and tried to update it and now it says it is in restore mode, in my itunes and when i try to restore it i get the following error message. is it a lost cause or can i do anything to get it to wake up.

the iphone "iphone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build

    Thanks.

Is it a Mac or PC? If PC you may want to check the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file for an entry mentioning "gs.apple.com" which is often inserted by jailbreaking software. This can mess up an official Apple restore.

was it jailbroken or unlocked, it's possible it could have the ipad baseband installed so a stock restore won't work

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3939 see the difference in the writing on the back of the 3g and 3gs, if its a 3g you can put 4.2.1 on it but if it's a 3gs you can put ios 5 onto it

google custom iphone firmware for links to the firmware and also a guide on how to do it
