Data Usage

is there any rule of thumb on how much data andriod phones use. getting my first one this week and don't know weather to go for a 40 euro a month contract with 2GB data and get the phone for free or get the 25 euro a month contract with 1GB data and pay 109 euro for the phone.

Don't wanna find out after a month that the 1GB contract isin't enough and end up upgrading to the 2GB contract and essentially loosing out on 109 euro when I could have gone for it in the first place.

sorry about the babbling but im sure you understand where I am coming from as getting my first andriod and first time with a data allowance on my contract.

I would only be using data recreationally and not heavy use, check emails once or twice a day, facebook on the lunch break, quick online banking, the odd daytime post on boards of course ;) I would wait until at home and in the wifi to do big downloads.

Any rule of thumb for data allowance?

    Thanks in advance

    Any guideline would be useful.

No rule of thumb, but it sounds like 1Gb would be enough.

Just stay away from the likes of Youtube and other data-intensive sites.

I've used up to almost 6gb on my SGS II because the wifi reception can be very poor at times. If you want to use tethering at all then anything lower than 2gb is a risk.

I have a 1GB allowance and have never come using it in a month. I use the phone to tether to a Xoom tablet also as well as general web browsing/email etc.

I do have WIFI at home and would be connected to that in the evening and to be fair there are LOADS of free wifi spots around Dublin that I would connect to when out and about but I would imagine that 1GB is more than enough unless you do a lot of video streaming.

You can download a Data Monitor from the market also that will give you a good indication of how much you are using and will warn you when you are getting near your monthly allowance so you can turn it off.

I have 750mb a month but rarely hit get anywhere near it, 500 is normal for me. Thats with having wifi everywhere (i.e. home and college) so its not really used for much browsing out and about

I never go on wifi anymore, now that I have all you can eat data from 3.

Last month, I used 1.73 GB and in months previous I used 2GB, 2.5GB..

I don't bother with wifi either anymore since I got 3 all you can eat.
I'm up on 2.86GB so far this month :)
