Which car is most economic?

I had posted here before looking for a cheap economical car but now I am thinking more about investing more money and getting something really comfortable that will last me...

So I really want to get something that is in the lowest tax band (low emissions) and also gets great MPG.

I am single so don't need a big family car or anything.

I suppose I am looking at 12-15000 really.

Should I get a 2008 which will be cheaper to buy or should I get a new car on one of these new car schemes so it will then be more economical, higher MPG and have warranty for 3-5 years and not have to worry about NCT?

It also seems like there is great finance offers to be had out there for new cars from the actual car companies. Anyone know more about these, I heard about ones where you can have the car for 3 years and then sell it back to the company for an agreed price that is set in advance.

2008 and you can get something really nice for a fraction of the price, you can see it from a thread on here where a volvo s80 that cost 40k is now only worth 12. :)

I've always liked the Skoda Fabia... That's me, you could get one with plenty of spare change for your budget.

For comfort, well... I don't really know that much about recent cars in that catagory, so I'll leave that to someone else. :D Citreons are supposed to be cushy, I've heard.

A 2008 car will probably hold it's value better than say a '07 in terms of tax savings but that also means there are bargains to be had on car's from 2007. I think something like a Hyundai i30/Kia Ceed should fit the bill for you. A 1.6 diesel would fall into your range and have the lower tax. That being said not sure about how well they hold their value. Very long warranty with them too.

Your yearly mileage will determine whether you really need a diesel though. For town and city driving they don't make much sense, contrary to the opinion of many Irish people at the moment.

Ive been doing a bit of searching and it seems like the 2008-2009 1.4 diesel Seat Ibiza Ecomotive or Ecomotion would be a good buy as it is in lowest tax band and also gets 70MPG.

    Any thoughts on this?

    I am looking for:
    High MPG
    Low tax
    Diesel

    2008-2009

    €8000-€10000

I do quite a lot of mileage and driving so I think diesel would be best bet for me.

Horrible, vibratory engine in that Seat you suggest. What about a Honda Accord or Ford Mondeo. Both wonderful cars.

You'll have to rev the snot out of it and work the gearbox to keep up with traffic.

Good luck getting anything close to 70mpg driving like that

    Hmmmm

I see what you mean but I suppose if my whole reason for investing in a new car as opposed to an older one is to save on mileage and on road tax then surely the Seat Ecomotive would be the best option?

Any other alternatives for a very economical car with lowest band of road tax? Must be 2008 or 2009 model.

Do the sums, don't just follow the crowd, How much is the tax on the car you have now and what sort of miles do you do a week?

Emissions and MPG are just different ways of expressing the same thing. One goes up other goes down.

Fuel in is proportional to emissions out, with diesel producing slightly higher CO2 per litre than petrol.

BMW M3 or Toyota Supra TT.

    :p

But really, I dunno, once you get into small diesel engines, with low emissions and all that, they're all gonna be pretty much the same...horrible underpowered things with running costs all within a couple of euro of each other.

    Thanks guys

I have found some really good articles for MPG and Co2 for 2011 cars but nothing for 2008 or 2009 models and cars.

Anyone have any links to an article like the one below for 2008 or 2009:
