Golf Plus (MPV) Engine Problem 1.4 petrol

I'm posting this for a friend so apologies if the info is a bit sketchy

My friend has a 06 Golf Plus 1.4 petrol. Engine failed a few days ago (timing belt did not snap) and he has received the following diagnosis:

Con rod for no4 piston has sheared/buckled causing damage to the bottom half of the engine causing the engine block to be scored – Engine Code BCA

Mechanic has said that it will cost about 3k to repair the existing engine and that a secondhand replacement would be a more cost effective option. So does anyone know if this is a common problem for the VAG 1.4 petrol engine? Any suggestions where he might pick up a second hand engine, is the UK a better option?

    Thanks

They are far from a trouble free engine but a failing conrod or whatever wouldn't be something they would suffer with.

It wasn't driven through any floods was it?
