Hey! Considering my future, scary thought. I was thinking about trying to become a librarian. Has anyone thought about doing the same, or has anyone done a course anywhere? Thanks ;)

For an idea of what you'd be letting yourself in for, take a look at the thread on the UCD boards page on the MLIS (Masters in Library and Information Studies). You'll get plenty of help there. UCD also teach a postgrad diploma in Library and Information Studies. Dublin Business School teach a Masters in Library and Information Management - and I think they're the only two institutions in the country that issue library qualifications.

An alternative might be to get your qualification through distance learning with a British Institution like the University of Wales at Aberystwyth, University of Aberdeen, Loughborough University or the University of Sheffield.

Either way it's a good idea to get work experience before you start. Think about sending out your CV to as many Libraries as you can think of to get started.

Hope this helps - good luck!

Hi, I'm actually considering doing a course like that too. Thanks for the tips, Unshelved.

Sorry to be the voice of reason... but are you actually insane? Your chances of getting a job in a public sector library are almost non existant for the next ten years at least. You're going to get qualified in something you almost certainly won't find employment in.
