    Hi everyone,

A noob posting yet another Luas fine post!!

I was fined today (genuinely forgot to tag my smart-card on, d'oh!!).

I rang the number and they said I need to write to them in order to appeal it, I know my sister was fined and sent an email - unfortunately she no longer has the address.

Considering many of you seem to have gone through this process I was hoping you'd be able to tell me the email address? Or do I have no option but to use snail mail?

Thanks in advance everyone & apologies for the topic repeat, won't happen again ;)

intriged to know on what grounds you will appeal.your error after all.

It's simply info@luas.ie Also you could call them at 1800 300 604 and ask them how to proceed from here. If you are thinking of an appeal consider sending it by registered post as it will cover your arse in case your appeal gets lost/ignored/forgotten about; this seems to happen the odd time.

Cheers for that Losty! I rang them, and they just gave me the postal address, will probably go with that one so!

Corktina - I use the Luas every day, I spend a lot of money on travel and transport (like every commuter), as has been pointed out in every other post re: luas on this site, I am an honest person who was not trying to scam the system, this is simply a case of human error, I would happily pay the fine (well not happily but I'd pay it) if I were trying to cheat or scam. I wasn't, this was a once off case. I'll happily pay the money I owe for the journey!

Offer to buy a weekly/monthly/annual ticket. It would save money short and long term.

Stupid irish. No offence. but seriously they should have the meter on the Luas with them you tap it as they pass which checks and clocks you in.

Im starting to get real annoyed with the stupid attitude of irish workers. Public ones at that Eg IR, DB Violia*, Very snobby attitude lately to the normal human being.
/rant cause i dont want to be ranting.

    No need for such comments.

Do you mean have the validator on the tram? Then you have people queuing to get on an off the tram. What if you forgot to tag-off when you got off the tram and you were charged the fare all the way to the end of the line? That might be practical on a small tram, but not one carrying 350 people.

I wonder if having validators on the tram and on the platform would work. One of the problems with having them on the tram is that people would try to game the system by not paying until they reach a zone boundary.

Would some sort of tag reader over the doorways be practical? Something that can read your tag as you enter and alight is what I'm thinking of here. E tagging for cars would suggest that one can be tagged at a long distance, would it work on for people and their volumes?

Why on earth are you you using a smart card? You'd save so much more by using a tax saver ticket or a weekly/monthly/annual ticket.

An annual 'all zone' Luas ticket can be as cheap as €1.10 per day.

Wouldn't be much point in it, you'll still need to have it out and visible to the validator. You may also require people to walk on / off in a certain order also.

People don't even wait for others to get off before trying to get on, so that'll never work.

Actually it can and does work, but it requires more powerful and expensive technology (for instance bluetooth low profile has a range of 100m, versus 20cm for RFID).

IBM have experimented with similar technology where you have a trolley full of shopping, with all the items having their own individual tags and you just push it past the door and it counts and charges them all.

But it is a lot more expensive.

This would also potentially solve the problem of quickly tagging on and off on buses, but it seems it is too costly to be considered.

I think its a useless System that they have, it should should be like the Oyster. For instance i tagged at the station. Yet a conductor came on the train and asked for Tickets and had a machine on him that i had to tag which he would double check that i have paid. Can check your history you see Date, times and zones.

Yes its not password encrypted. You have to register online and sure we all know London is Big Brother. the almighty great full watching eye. I presume by registering your signing an agreement which states that you give The TFL the right to your account to access.

The problem with things like that is that it ends up billing people who weren't on the tram / bus. They've even experimented with systems that check the entire vehicle every X seconds but it still counts people in the next vehicle, people cycling alongside etc.
    I presume
    Have you checked?

but they already have access to the account registered or not (admittedly they might not know who's account it is).

Well that's what I presume, I don't know but I was trying to make the point to Shannon Tek that what S/he says is a useless system here (RPA Revenue Protection) is the same as that used in (in his/her mind) the superior Oyster Card system. S/He didn't seem to pick up on that though.
