What size violin for an 8 year old?

My daughter is starting lessons and my old violin is too big. What size would you reckon I should get - 1/4, 1/2, 3/4? It's difficult to get to a shop with her so I'll be buying blind.

Hiya, normally it is judged by if you can, with you arm fully stretched, hold the scroll of the violin. It is hard for me to judge not knowing the size of your daughter. If you measured the length of her arm from shoulder/neck - finger tips the people in the shop may be able to tell you then. I'd highly recommened Crehans. I've bought many violins from them and they are really knowledgeable and are glad to let you stay in the shop for as long as you want and they have always known the answer to any questions i've asked. Hope that helps a bit.

Hi, if she is average size probably a 3/4 will do.

My dad used to play violin when he was 5-6 and he had a 1/2. I tried it as a teenager but found it too small. 15 and older shall need a full size would be my experience. Cheers.
