E320cdi poor fuel consumption after service

I have an 06 merc E320cdi saloon which I have had from new. The average fuel consumption has always been on the dash as 32-34 mpg On good long runs it would get up to 38-40 mpg.I had it in for a service last week at a different garage to the one I used to use and since I got the car back the average consumption showing on the dash is 23 -25 mpg. I took it for a long run over the weekend and the best I could get was 31 mpg.

I am completely sure that this is due to something that the mechanics have done during the service but I don't know what could cause the massive increase in fuel consumption.

    Anyone any suggestions for me?

Have a look under your bonnet and make sure every that should be connected up is connected up.

Make sure your MAF (Mass airflow sensor) is properly plugged or screwed in and not damaged.

Have you rang the garage and let then know of your concerns.

Hi , I went back to the garage today and they said " it can't be anything we've done " He had a look under the Bonnet appeared to double check there was nothing loose etc. re MAF , will get it checked tomorrow

It was in for a standard service , so oil change and oil and air filters .

I'd say it will level out after a few 100km, I notice a decrease in mpg when I service my own car also, presume its the ECU adjusting for more air coming in better performing engine etc.

I actually service theses cars every day of the week and if there was n e thing left loose you can be sure the management light would come loose.the only possible thing that could be causing your problem is there are plastic fuel pipes that the o rings go hard on one of them could be slightly leaking.but if that was the case.the car should be hard to start.id say leave it for a day or two and check how many mpg your getting.

.............I second this too,m having worked on many.

If you are simply going by the on-board computer then the reality is after possibly a brisk test drive and some extended time spent idling the computer will show lower figures.
