Is €661 good or bad for insurance?

    Hello all,

That time of the year again where I must look for insurance. It seems AA with €661 is the best for fully comp, with other charging all the way up to €1,300

I have a 2002 1.4L 5 door Saloon Honda Civic, I'm 30 year old male, and have had the full license since June this year, with 2 years no claims (when I was on provisional under my own name).

Have tried AXA, Quinn-Direct, FBD, insure.ie (I think 123.ie only do cars that are 2003 and newer), but all alot more expensive.

    Any ideas?

I think you've pretty much answered that yourself!
Sounds quite reasonable in the current climate with companies whacking up their premiums nearly on a daily basis.

If you've shopped around properly and it's the best quote you can get for the cover you want then take it.

why are they whacking up prices?? I moved from 4 - 5 years no claims bonus, moved from 1.6litre petrol car to 1.1litre, price was the same i think!!!

TBH it does seem a tad on the high side considering you have hit the 30 year old threshold.Does that price with AA include breakdown assist as I know they dont give it as standard.Have you tried Chill.ie?

I work for them (not in the sales end of the company before anyone says anything :P ) and they frequently come in a good bit cheaper than the companies you have mentioned.Might not be any harm to give them a shout anyway or maybe check the website.

Because Insurance companies invest a proportion of premiums on the markets to make a return to pay claims (simplified but roughly). Markets taken a hammering the last few years, so premiums go up (other factors will apply).

€660 sounds fair enough to me tbh. Insurance companies dont always like men driving Civics, and though you are 30 you are only driving 6 months. The NCB on a provisional wouldn't count as much as you think, though it does help.

You could try a couple of independent brokers and see what they say. It costs no more than a few phone calls. My car and vans are all done through a broker and they were a lot cheaper than anyone else.

    Have you tried Chill.ie?.
I told my provider that they quoted 170 less than them last month and they matched it on the spot....

Try Tescos. I was with the AA last year and they hiked me by €70. Tescos came in 150 cheaper with better cover. There was extra discount for having a club card and a Tesco Credit card.

TBH though you'll need to rack up a few years no claims to see a decent improvement.

Why do you have comprehensive insurance on a 02 car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

I've used insure.ie for the last few years and they've been quite helpful & gotten me good prices. Always worth trying a broker.

Why do you have comprehensive insurance on a 02 car?
Last time I looked into it, it was cheaper to fix the car than buy a new one, so I picked comprehensive. In saying that, please give your opinion on the matter, as 3rd party does seem nice and cheap.

Aye, with them atm. They're not bad, but looking around for something cheaper. It seems the full license gets me 50 less insurance...
    Have you tried Chill.ie?
    Chill.ie comprehensive - €694

    =-=

nononsense - €447 before I enter my details, after, I get this bullsh|t:
You have no driving experience, either in your own name or as a named driver
Your car is a high performance or modified car
Your car is over 14 years old
Your car does not currently have a valid NCT certificate
Your license type or that of any additional drivers is not currently accepted for a quote
You are not actually the registered owner of car
It seems my 1.4L Civic is a "high performance car"... :pac:

    =-=

Tesco - €327 After I enter in my details
Unfortunately due to the details you have provided, we cannot complete your quotation online.

    =-=

Quote Devil - €643 with "XS Direct" or €731 with "Zurich - Motorstar". I don't think XS Direct are meant to be great, though.

You can fix a car that is insured 3rd party f&t too you know, if you claim your insurance will probably double, they'll recoup the cost of the claim on an 02 Civic in 3 to 4 years, you'll also probably be paying an excess of a couple of hundred too.

I've only ever been insured comp for a year and than was a company car, I've been driving on 3rd party private policies for the other 12 years, max value of an car I ever had was €5000.

If I had a car worth €5000+ now I'd probably go comp as with a full license for 10 years and full ncb the difference in price is small enough, if it was a couple of hundred on a cheap car no way would I consider going comp.

€600 odd sounds reasonable to me for a male on a high risk car(as opposed to a high performance car) with very little driving experience. Civics are one of the most stolen cars so will have a higher loading. It also depends on what area of what county you live in. Dublin city center will have a higher loading then rural leitrim for example.

Try putting a 02 VW golf 1.4 into the online quote things and see the difference.

Who is the chill quote with Syco? The majority of the compaines they use have breakdown assistance as standard with their comp policy. If the quote was on the website, ring them and give them a speil about having slightly cheaper prices elsewhere and they will likely match or beat the 661 from AA.

I put in a 1.2L Polo and got 642 with AA. €18 cheaper with a lower litre car, but not that much of a difference. Location is Kildare.

First car, looking at quotes... BMW 318 coupe.
Quoted 1024 from the AA which seems to be the best offer I have gotten. No NCB, full licence held 1 month, only named driver experience before now. The next closest was no nonsense at about 1100.
Friend of mine got a great quote on Tesco after ringing them. They seem to be good if you have some NCB. Not so great for my quote though.
Tesco definitely worth a phone call...

If you are getting quotes from Tesco be careful what you are getting. They have 3 separate types of comprehensive cover so a cheaper price may mean a lower level of cover.

I never understand why people refer to Tesco as 'Tescos'. I genuinely don't. I'm not having a go at you, mind, but just people who say that in general.

Nobody can tell you who is going to give you the best quote. Different companies may go for different sectors of the market. I don't think 650 is excessive considering you've very little driving experience and have a car that will be loaded.

The best thing to do is pick up the phone and spend the afternoon ringing everyone. Get you lowest 3 quotes at the end of it and ring them back trying to get them to knock a few quid of by playing them against each other.

I don't think you'll go markedly lower than 600. Next year you should get another good chunk off.

All you can do is ring everybody, but I'd agree, around €600 is as decent as you'll get, and it is a pretty good price considering the car and your NCB.

Seems I may have ticked the "no" option for "have you lived in Ireland for the last 3 years" box. Got a quote of €595 (value)/ €780 (standard)/ €893 (finest). From looking at what it includes, my current insurer Kenco does what the "finest" option.

It cost me €5000 when I bought it, and it'd cost me (according to carzone) about €3000/€4000 to buy one now.

Chill.ie comprehensive - €694 with XS Direct. Same quote as Quote Devil, actually. Exact same, actually.

Yup. Their value package seems to be 3rd party with a higher price :pac:

Aye, I think I'll have to do this. A few have rang me, but there's a crap signal here in work, so I don't get to ring them back :( Will take a day off before my insurance runs out, and do it then.

Id avoid that XS Direct policy like the plague mate, even if they were coming in significantly cheaper. The benefits are nearly non existent and there is an excess of €3000 on it.

Seems AA are stuck with you for the year!

The euro. Like ‘pound’, ‘dollar’ or any other currency name in English, the word ‘euro’ is written in lower case with no initial capital. Where appropriate, it takes the plural ‘s’ (as does ‘cent’):

This book costs ten euros and fifty cents
