    Just curious about the recruitment process for the special branch. How are individuals selected? Is there an application process or are the members selected based upon merit?

    Thats exactly what he means , OP this thread will carry posts that say it's all who you know and not what you know while others will say that appointment is on merit.

    Yes - one applies when a position is available... you are selected (or not) based on a range of things i would imagine, but its all very special.

    Application process, competency based. Same as any civil service job.


    Oh and when you say Special Branch i presume you mean the Special Detective Unit or SDU.

    The Special Detective Unit (SDU) is responsible for the investigation of threats to the state security and the monitoring of persons who pose a threat to the security of the State on both national and international fronts.

    The Unit also provides security for visiting VIP’s, cash in transit movements and armed response. The SDU is the operational wing of the Witness Security programme.

    The highly trained and equipped specialist intervention unit, the Emergency Response Unit, is part of SDU.
