Non qualifying comps

Just wondering what determines that a comp is non qualifying?

Recently my club had comps that were non qualifying. I've noticed the scoring has been excellent, I presume due to the fact that the individuals in question realise there are no handicap cuts in place.

Is it non qualifying if placing in fairways is used?

clean & place everywhere usually means non-qualifying.

What they have is as following:

    1. Placing on fairway within 6 inches

    2. Dropping in rough within 12 inches

Should these comps then be qualifying?

If it's placing on the fairway only then it's a qualifying event. If it's placing everywhere then it's non-qualifying and the scores will be much better than normal because you can place the ball in the rough as if it's on a tee.

Then it's been done incorrectly for past 2 weekends. It was only placing in fairway and handicaps were not touched.

Is there anywhere I can get an official quote on it as I want to have my facts right if I say it to them

When ye say placing only on fairway what is the situation regards the rough?

Is the placing on fairway, dropping in rough scenario qualifying? Or must it be placing on fairways, play as lies in rough?

I thought it was if you can touch the ball anywhere but on the fairway, i.e both placing in the rough and/or dropping in the rough meant it was non-qualifying comp for handicap, no?

Placing on fairways, Play as it lies in rough - Qualifying

Placing on Fairways, drop or place in rough - Non Qualifying.

The club can decide it's non qualifying even if it's just placing on the fairway and play it as it lies in the rough. I think it's up to the club to deem a comp qualifying or non, nothing in the rules that says a comp has to be qualifying.

Its also no qualifying if you have some closed holes, eg water logging. Can only be qualifying if comp is 9 or 18 holes.

Open to correction but I thought if it was non-qualifying it just meant there are no handicap increases, and that cuts are based on the SS on the card ?

The GUI stipulate that a competition is non-qualifying when:

    1. It is played over a course shortened by more than 100 yards or 91 metres.
    2. It is played with other than full handicaps.
    3. Players are allowed re-entry on the same day.
    4. It is played over a few days and re-entry is allowed each day but only an overall CSS is calculated.
    5. Preferred lies are allowed outside the period October 1st to April 30th without official permission from area authority.
    6. It is played contrary to the rules of golf.
    7. No CSS is calculated.
    8. The committee in charge of the competition declare it a non-qualifying before play commences and advises competitors of such.

that's reduction only comps, where you can still get cut but not get .1 back, so still qualifying. Normally in really tricky conditions.

Battled for 29 points off the back in Headfort New to find it was reduction only for visitors ... members got their .1 .. really tough day with a strong wind blowing most of the day. 4 ball ahead of us couldn't reach par 3 17th all 4 teeshots fed the fish in the river... great course !!
