I've broken the windscreen in a 96 vw polo. It's totally ruined. How much to fit it or can it be done at by yourself. The car is just bought and has no insurance.

    Probably cost around €250 - 400 fitted.

do not try it yourself as special tools are required without which you risk breaking the new screen or damaging yourself.

Got 2 quotes today for a 01 Primera ranging from 170-185 fitted inc vat. I expected it to be a lot more.

I'd say less than €200 myself, normally you get a "bill" of €250-€350 when it goes through the insurance company but this is never actually paid by the insurance company as they get a discount bringing it in a lot less. Always when looking for quotes and it's not through your insurance company mention to the installer that you are a cash customer.

I'm waiting to hear back from a boy about installing a second hand one. U couldn't make it up. I was driving it about a mile from where I bought it and the bonnet flew up, cracking the windscreen. Could have been worse.

This all took place in the arse end of nowhere in the wilds of Donegal. About 8 miles from the nearest town or village. This aint d4 or the like.

Well this thread has gone a bit off topic. Thought it was about the price of a new windscreen. I need a new one as well since I broke mine and I had no insurance. Kind of annoying. Was just driving around one day and see the split come along my windscreen.

    Turns out I didn't have windscreen insurance:mad:

where are you going you d get a whole 96 polo for 400 euro,

your been done if it cost 200 euro, about 100 to 150 fitted,

get golden pages out and ring around a few places, would nt bother trying to do it yourself, windscreen fitting places dont charge that much more for fitting, and it wont be leaking or any other problems

As usual jercotter. Although I state at the start I have no insurance, the rules of the forum are that you must answer the question and not be judgemental as long as discussions don't ENCOURAGE illegal activities.

I get fed up of forums as they are littered with ppl like this.

Look as I started the forum I think I have the right to say, discussion can only be about windscreen cover and advice from now on.

    As per the question.

    Thanks.

I also get fed up with "ppl" that think they can drive on public roads without insurance.

Now, back to your question. I don't know how much a replacement windscreen would cost, my insurance provider normally pays for repair\replacement directly.

Take out fully Comp insurance. Pay in monthly installments.
Claim for your wind screen, cancel after first month. END OF

There nothing wrong with what I'm saying, it's your right to cancel.
The windscreen could break within the first week and three weeks later you decide to cancel..
Don't tell them it's broken when signing up tho.

I work for a few people I know.
It amazes me that people would actually fork out their own money for a windscreen.

No it's not. Well Lets you take out insurance on day 1.
    day 2: Wind screen Breaks
Day 3: you Claim for windscreen and have it fixed.

Day 30: You no longer need insurance cancel it.

    Is that fraud?
Anyways insurance is a rip off in this country, I've no problem getting some of my money back.
Dont worry they have no problem underpaying you for accidents too you know.

    .

Eh, why wouldn't you tell them if it isn't fraud. OP, don't follow this advice it's not worth the potential problems.

No, but that's not what you are advocating, is it?

Partially because of uninsured drivers and fraud.

The OP, drove without insurance so I dont think he will have much problem doing this.

I dont really care, it's just my 2 cent.

I've given insurance companies LOTS of money over the years so they owe a little to me once in a while.

Hope you get your windscreen sorted!

    Possibly yes,
But not even the insurance company can PROVE that the windscreen was broken before signing up.
so there's nothing they could do and they have to pay up.
