The poor guy must have taken too many hits to the head and is now suffering amnesia. I hope the doctors can diagnose it quickly and start treatment immediately.

The evidence is from the Sunday Times' heineken cup preview:

"When I was playing for Munster, we never really had a tough game out of Leinster."

I hope he recovers his senses quickly. ;-)

Yeah, I was cracking up reading that, I'm going to hope that it was somehow quoted out of context...

Saw that quote on Sunday, and thought he may have just been trying to be a bit provocative. He had a few gentle cuts at Shane Byrne as well in the same interview!

To be honest though, I have absolutely huge, huge respect for Quinlan. And I HATED him when he was a player for Munster!

To have come out the way he has about the problems he went through in his life with depression since his marriage break-up cannot have been an easy thing for him, and if the stories I hear from friends who ran into him in NZ during the WC are anything to go by, he possibly hasn't exorcised all of those demons yet either.

But having a guy who was known throughout his career to be as tough as nails come out on this issue is something that might actually make it more acceptable for more people in similar situations to do so too, and definitely make it easier to go in and talk to kids in schools about the issue too.

    Huge respect for him.

Guess he was just trying to "gouge" the reaction from Leinster fans?

For the week that's in it can we please not antagonise each other, there is a lot of sniping in the forum at the moment and things that may be said in jest are not been taken that way by other posters

agree - depression is a bollox that hits everybody in some way throughout there life - many great sports folk are particularly prone - from George Best to Paul McGrath to many great boxers - sometimes i think depression is just a part of lifes journey - a particularly horrible part

I feel sorry for anyone suffering from depression but I can't respect anyone stupid enough to miss a Lions tour from resorting to thuggery on the pitch. Quinlan is his own worst enemy

Anyway back on topic, when he says tough game what context did he mean. If it's by physical battering then it's his own opinion but if it's by how easy it is to win then it is just wrong since Quinlan lost to Leinster many times

Can I sum it up - "it's a stupid thing to say".

He actually has a pretty good record against Leinster winning 10/17 games that he played in and there were 2 draws (these aren't included in my little stat!).

He made some other interesting comments in The Sunday Times, he said that Munster were an ageing team and that if they didn't get off to a good start they might not qualify. Or something along those lines. I was surprised to hear him say that to be honest.

I've a copy in my bathroom but you can't take it out as I'm not finished it yet!:p

What the op says is a direct quote.

I thought his comment about Shane Byrne was him just taking the mick. For those that haven't read it (or been in my bathroom) Quinlan was saying how strong defences are now and most teams have a defence coach now. Back in his day it was different and that even Shane Byrne was making line breaks. The article was a Shane Byrne, Quinlan, Miles Harrison, Peter O Reilly, and Stephen Jones I think having an open discussion on this seasons Heineken Cup.

Only Alan Quinlan would use a national paper to go 'fishing' . How can anyoneone here still not see a p1ss take with all the gentle ribbing that goes on

I reckon Quinlan is probably the most likely of any past professional rugby player to get some joy from trolling Leinster fans!

Spot on. How many times have we seen him do this on the pitch (Adam Jones, Ospreys/Munster in the HC, springs to mind)?

You've got to admire him for not sticking to the plain pc freindly scripts that so many ex-players adhere to

Impossible to tell from black and white text, context was the panel talking about leinster.s mental strength in the hc final,
    AQ says;

"They were phenomenal. The Leinster team in the last couple of years are really mentally tough. When I was playing for Munster, we never really had a tough game out of Leinster."

No indication if he was serious or not so your opinion of it will depend on whether you think "Quinny" is a "ligind"

So let me get this straight, a load of lads are discussing an article that none of them have read and are making judgment calls and what he did or didn't mean, I've actually read it and go to the bother of putting it up on the board and I'm the one getting stick? Good luck

I don't know you from Adam but believe it or not I am capable of posting an opinion thats not dependent on my provincial loyalties as you are suggesting.

I did actually read the article in quaestion and my take on it that it is a pundit style off the cuff type converstion with plenty of scope for the afore mentioned piss taking.

Good luck to us both ;)

I thought the most interesting thing he had to say in the article were his criticisms of Munster's back row, and his line about how he'd hoped they'd side a big-name international there.

Doesn't exactly imply an awful lot of confidence in the guys that are there. He praised Peter O'Mahony too, but wasn't exactly gushing about him.

    Jaysus he must of.

Quote of the week, on Halfpenny:

He's the opposite of the big guys, he's a small guy.:D:D

he is 5'10 and 13.st 1 according to wru. George north is 6'4" and 16.5 stone. cutbert is 6'6" and 16.5 stone as well.

halfpenny is even smaller than keith earls who is regarded as being small (5'11" and 14st 1 lb - irfu).

I didn't read the Sunday Times article, but I have been reading his weekly articles in the Irish Times these past few weeks. The latter have been top notch insights into what it is actually like to be a professional rugby player - some of the best rugby reading I've encountered.

I think if he sticks to being honest, and being a straight shooter in his writing, and keeps clear of the standard cliches that make up the vast majority of what gets written by others, he could have a great media career.

Agreed. Out of the recent entries to the media, he's far and away the best.
Frankie Sheehan and more recently Shane Horgan are fairly painful to listen to. For different reasons, but both are hard to listen to imo

Okay, well my post was having a bit of fun, like taking the mick out of pundits. Particularly pundits who state the obvious. It wasn't meant as a go at Quinlan, just the conviction of his statement where he stated the obvious, I found to be funny. That Halfpenny isn't a big guy he's a small guy, and this in the context of how it was said and in the overall point Quinlan was making was funny. (It reminded me of a Scottish commentator whose commentary consists of differentiating between and referring to all players as 'wee lad' or 'big lad').

Then jm08 posted in retaliation showing me Quinlan's statement is in fact 100% correct, which I never doubted, just the seriousness with which he took my post left me perplexed. Pedantic I know.;)

This thread has gone down a strange path, but I refuse to believe that Keith Earls is heavier than Halfpenny; Halfpenny is built like a tank.
