The Metro is the best and cheapest option, it is available from within the airport, once you come out of arrivals just follow the signs. The metro is really easy to use so you should have no problem following it to get to your destination (you could probably download a map prior to arrival, there will be loads available when you get there anyway) From what I remember it takes around 40mins to get from Barajas (airport) to Puerto del Sol, which is the centre of the city.

I defo recommend you do the tour bus as it will bring you all around the city and you can jump on and off at whatever sites take your fancy. Must sees are the usual - Puerto del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Retiro Park, La Latina, the palace, the museums.... There's loads to do there. Madrid is a great city. Enjoy your trip!
