    Hi
Just looking for some advice. My open fire had been smoking a lot so had someone out to look at it. He said there had been a chimneny fire and stack was cracked with flue linings all damaged. Insurance have agreed to cover it for a specific amount.
So I'm in the process of getting quotes and getting more confused by the minute.
One guy says crack on stack is just plaster crack and he will reline with flexible stainless steel flue for €1,500.
2nd guy says chimney needs knocking and rebuilding and will reline with clay flue I think and will cost €5,500 which is more than the insurance.
The guy who originaly looked at it said it needed rebulding and I should get solid metal flue not flexible. Don't have exact quote from him yet but think it was about €4k+.

so basically how do I know who is right? Does the chimney need rebuilding or is it a plaster crack?
Which flue is the best; clay, flexible, solid?

How am I to know which is best if the 'experts' vary so much?

Hi:) Any chance of some photos of the chimney and the external chimney above the roof? Is there any visible cracks on the outside of the chimney or is it letting any water in?

    IMO:

smoking chimney not the cause of the smoke so the pics and height details as requested earlier will help: also are u near trees other buildings.

ss flue is the wrong solution, has a much shorter life than people think.

The insurance will only pay what is spent and ur premium will go up anyway so spend the max:)

When getting it rebuilt with clay liners, consider making provision for a stove, will be much more efficient and when not in use will keep ur house much warmer

Hi i have experience in all types of chimney liner if you have to get your chimney demolished & re-built make sure all flue liners are removed and would advise re-lining using solid stainless steel flueliners 8" in diameter with a 20 year guarantee anything smaller will cause smoke problems in an open fire

I have the same problem. Experts offered stainless steel flue solution. Have you fixed it and how?
