Hi all. As the heading suggests I am looking to get back golfing after a few years off. I am hoping some of you could point me in the right directions for good membership deals. I live close to shannon but I am told its 4000 euro for full membership... Crazy in the current climate imo. Anyone got any suggestions?

Hang tough on Shannon. There is a special AGM next week so I imagine the hello money will have to be reduced. I'm holding on to see what happen's as I would love to join next year.

I would love that to happen! Shannon is a marvelous track and as i'm very close (limerick) i could be tempted if the price was right! :D

I'm waiting until january to decide on where to join so i would appreciate some info on the OP as well.

Woodstock is a nice course and i think it's around EUR 800 a year.

thanks for the replies folks. yep i heard there was an egm convened for tomorrow night.....will wait with baited breath for info coming out of that. i live so close to it that it would be ideal but could not raise 4 grand at the mo.....could probably stretch to 2000 - 2500 euro but that is a big amount in the current climate. don't want to come across as tight fisted. that is a good deal for woodstock too.....might consider that.

Thanks vikingg. yeah I was a member there before and enjoyed it a lot but I was spending a fortune on petrol and when my golf buddies left I did too. I think shannon would be my number one choice as I have quite a few friends there and its only about a ten min drive. I think this egm is on tonight so if I hear anything positive from that obviously that will influence my decision. They are allegedly proposing to raise their annual sub too which has angered a lot of members when you consider a substantial amount had to take sabbatical last january cos of cost. Baffling.....

Bad news on shannon folks. Membership stays at two grand. ..not even sure if that is for full our just five day membership. Seems crazy from a club that was alledgely losing money and members.

That's the levy cut in half, it was €4000. €904 for the year and the levy can be paid over a number of years. If the levy can be paid over 5/10 years you're looking at €1104 or €1304 for the best golf course in and around limerick (In my opinion)

Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of money and a big commitment but Adare is €1000, Castletroy is €1500 with a €5000 levy. Rathbane isnt even worth mentioning (member there for last 2 years). Apart from Ardagh at €800 there is very little to compete with Shannon at that price. Ardagh is that bit too far to travel for me as is Ballykisteen, I'm leaving Rathbane for sure anyway and Shannon is no.1 on the list

So would I have to pay 2000euro plus the 904 in january to join up or is it just 2000euro alone?

Where did you hear this about the levy staying? I was told by a few sources that it was gone!

The levy is €2000 payable over 10 years with membership at €939 for the year .

A friend of mine was at the agm last night and texted me after it. Disappointing alright but he reckons that some members believed if the hello money was removed that it would only encourage 'riff raff' to join up.... Thats his opinion....im not saying that that was actually stated at the agm. Oh well.......

Still quiet expensive though for a course that is not even the best in clare......

No problem buddy....matter of opinion I guess. Shannon is a fine course, don't get me wrong, and more importantly is a good test for any golfer. Are you going to join up keano? Might have a nice chat with the better half and see if the auld finances can stretch that far.....

Thinking about it. Obviously if they levy was gone I would be there in a shot but you'll be looking at over the grand a year now, if the levy can be paid off over a number of years.

The breakdown is this, levy stays at €2000 and the sub is gone up €30 to €939 (includes €100 behind the bar) as was stated on the previous page. Levy is payable over 10 years so €200 a year. Sub and levy combined is therefore €1139 annually. Levy can be paid off in part or in full at any time. The €1139 is payable monthly through direct debit as far as I know. Works out at €22 a week, for me it's the best value in the limerick area. Question I asked myself and it's the be all and end all for abybody thinking of joining really is are you going to get value for that €22 a week? Play 50 rounds in the year? I definitely will as I work nights and play at least once weekly. Everybody is different though

is shannon the only golf course in clare?

No there's the Antlantis golf course just off the coast of Kilkee. You can only find your way there by sonar and you need gills to become a member which rules that one out for me I'm afraid.

my point being that the title suggests this is a thread about club memberships across a whole county (or surrounding areas of shannon in any case)

Mods - please amend the title and warn the OP

Thanks for all that info dines08. Much appreciated. I work shift myself so the more I think about it the more tempting it is. Woodstock also seems like great value but its been so long since I played there I would not know what condition its in.
