Out of contract League of Ireland players.

I was reading an article in one of the papers over the weekend about Richie Ryan's career to date. Despite being last years player of the year it seems he only had a 9 month contract this season and has no idea what the new season will bring. The article suggested that most LOI players were in the same position, is this common practice? Surely it would be in the clubs interest to have their better players tied down to a 3 year contract.
Also, if an english club came in for him would Sligo be entitled to a transfer fee or compensation? Maybe I picked the article up wrongly but I thought it was a bit strange when I was reading it. Are most players contracted just for the duration of each individual season?

Very hard to get a part-time player to sign a more than 1 year contract, as they're not getting paid in the winter so they've no motivation to stick around as opposed to find a better option if it is available.

Richie Ryan certainly ain't part-time though. I think the situation there is that he was on a 2 year contract which would inevitably end at the end of the season (as theres no real reason for a club to extend a contract for when they're not playing) and hasn't yet decided whether he will stick around with Sligo or move elsewhere.

Word is Richie will be in America next year.

Good luck to him if he does.

All clubs basically operate on season to season in terms of contracts. The longest contract signed by a Shamrock Rovers player was 3 years and that was Stephen Rice. A few others were given 2 year deals with the aim being we could get money if clubs came in.

No one wants to be in a Bohs position of having to pay crazy money to past it players. Clubs learned by their mistakes years ago. Anything longer than a year basically means a club is hoping for resale.

Also, if an english club came in for him would Sligo be entitled to a transfer fee or compensation?

Only if under a certain age they are given compensation for money spent developing that player. Cant remember the exact amounts but it's added up arseways IIRC.

i know in longford a good few of the players signed 2 year contracts at the start of the season, the young lads who would be first team regualars, in the hope of getting a bit of stability back into the club and not having to start out from scratch again, seeing as we have twice in the last 3 years, and it was doing us no good, this year we have progressed from last season and hopefully with our best players tied to us for another season it will only push us on again!

My understanding of it was that at the start of the year he resigned for Sligo for 9 months, I thought that being player of the year, having had experience in England, it would be in the clubs interest to have him tied down to a contract. Then if a bigger club were interested they could command a fee.

Him being the best player also means he can dictate the length of his contract because if Sligo say no he can tell them to bog off and go somewhere else.

I was reading on foot.ie that monaghan were operating on 2.5k playing budget a week ( I dont know if that includes roddys wages), so I can understand their year to year approach. Any player that has a good season though, could really cash in the following season when they are free to go wherever they want.

Which is only fair. Do you support a team yourself?

Not any specific team, I love most sports though and would follow gaa, rugby and soccer. I knew a fella involved with St Pats a few years ago and went to a few games there with him, but I wouldnt consider myself a Pats fan.

Just for arguements sake, if someone took over a club and pumped a bit of money into it, they could basically pick up the majority of the previous seasons players, who made the team of the year for next to nothing.

Just don't do what Leeson did when he gave O'Donnell and Sheppard contracts until the end of December in the hope of getting a fee for them when any club who wanted them could just wait until January (still 2 months before the season starts) and get them for free.

Yes but the money isn't there to have the players on any other form of contract. If you're going to force players to go on contracts for a few years, you'll have to pay them during the off-season and pay them more.

Not saying it's what started it, but RTE commentary during the final mentioned he might possibly be going to the MLS, and possibly Dallas.

    4 long months

There's always the licensing fiasco as well as the situations at Bohs and Galway to tide us over 'til then.

It's hard to get good young players like that to sign longer contracts even if you wanted to give them as they'll have a eye on the magic airplane.

Thankfully Enda Stevens was in contract but there have been a few recently that were not.

Not really. You can't sign everybody and then personal preferences, wages, location and so come in to the reckoning. Rovers probably have the best squad (as in depth of squad quality) in the league but you can hardly say they have all the best players.

Really?? First I've heard of it. We will have no issues getting a licence.

Are Gamble and Behan on full time contracts? Kenny Browne (Waterford) is the only one of in the First Division that is a on 12 month contract iirc.
