I recently received a 4 yr old iphone from my sister as she has upgraded. (she was not the first owner she bought it second hand) Before handing it over she wiped it. When i got it it would not switch on, it would just display the apple icon and a smaller icon like a cog turning.
After doing a little online research I connected the phone to itunes and restored it successfully. By that I mean the computer downloaded new software, and I presume installed it to the phone. (i did this without a sim in the phone)
When I put my sim in this evening and turned it on it tells me "sim locked, insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate iphone". Displayed in the backround there is also a white usb lead with an arrow pointing to an itunes symbol. When i enter my pin it says "unlocking please wait" and then "pin entry succeeded". It then displays the meteor name top left corner but there is a capital E after it, and a closed padlock symbol after that again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, I know its an old phone but its a lot better than what i have now. Thanks for your time.

Only did this myself tonight, you need to download redsnow 0.9.3 and the 3.1.3 firmware file for the 2g iPhone, run redsnow and point it to the firmware file and it will activate and jailbreak it for you if you need to unlock it download the bootloader files too , theres lots of guides

I believe you need to use the 3.1.2 firmware from here
even though the phone is on 3.1.3
    for the jailbreak
