2006 Volvo V50 2.0D Faulty ECU

Hi there lads. Thanks to the frost today, I found out that my ECU is damaged.
I've most probably damaged it during the floods on Monday two weeks ago.

    Symptoms:
Warning message: BRAKE FAILURE, STOP SAFELY
Wipers turn on. Cars dials go to zero. Mileage is present in the form of

When car was turned off, the computer then said IMMOBILISER SEE MANUAL.

I've taken the car to a friend mechanic of mine, who then plugged in the Volvo computer he has, to reveal around 35 error codes including Mileage Tampered (of course mileage has never been messed with since the car's been bought new).

He cleared all the errors but the ECU ones reappared.

Is there any way I can get the ECU cheaper than 350 quid?

    Thanks in advance.

€350 for an ECU is pretty good tbh. Is the ECU brand new?

Hmmm, the keys might have to be recoded at a main dealer.

Could be wrong but I don't think you can swap over from another car...Like almost everything with Volvo I think you need to get a blank/virgin unit and then have the software downloaded which is unique to volvo dealer unfortunately ..

Reprogramming is not a problem. It's just the expensive ECU that is.

Once I get it fixed, no probs.

I've had a couple of s40s with symptoms (and stored faults) like this that were not down to ecu failure.
Had you a passenger in the car when the faults occurred?

    Yes, I did.

Well then your passenger most likely kicked the plugs on the gem unit behind the glovebox, these plugs contain the can wiring going out to each module and cause the symptoms and faults described.

What should be done then to get it fixed?

Check the plugs for visible damage/alignment.

Exador is right--I think you`ll find it is a problem. You cant reprogram anything from one Volvo to another. Its done through Vida which detects the original VIN that the part was programmed to and also connects to Volvos central servers and wont allow you to wipe/reprogram a used one to a different car.

You cant even swap radios from one Volvo to another.Basically anything that requires Volvo software cant be swapped from one car to another so if someone is telling you it can be done Id double check. It has to be done in a main dealer. The amount of lads we get in looking to get second hand units reprogrammed is just mad these days. Then when you tell them it cant be done they usually have a freaker and make out its our fault.

The fault you have sounds like the BCM (brake control module)--everything is routed through that and the symptoms youre getting sound 100% like its gone. When it goes it throws up errors on things that you wouldnt even think were related to it.
Pop me a pm and I`ll get you a price.

The computer gave me an error on both the BCM and the ECM.
I'll keep driving the car for now, since it seemed to be fine at temperatures over 3c. I drove it for 130km after being towed to the mechanic and nothing was wrong. Brakes, ABS and Traction Control work fine too, but I'm not sure if BCM has anything to do with them.

Yep I put money on it that its the BCM--Everything is routed through it including the ECM if Im not mistaken.

Temp has nothing to do with it.Its an intermittent fault which is the way it starts out.

It does. But usually you`ll get an "anti-skid" warning first.

    Hi everyone,

I own a 2008 c30 2.0D, due to front left accident, I had completely damaged ECM and now looking for replacement, I asked for an invoice from local dealer but the price was just choking!

Does anyone have any solution for me? could I get one of these apart from the official network?

Any info would be much appreciated,

    Omar

I got mine from a salvage V50, reprogrammed (who says it can't be done?) and it works fine so far (over a month, 4000+ km).

I would like to go for such solution but I spent huge time looking for used one in the web without success.

An other question I can't read the reference of the ECM i can only read sid803a the other ref that begin with 5ws40 is not complete. could you please give me this ref? or a pic?

Ya it is defo the the abs unit I seconded that as I've done one myself.it can be fixed in England abit cheaper then buying a new one but that problem is common enough through out.

If you're responding to my thread - no, it was the ECM.

In all my years in Volvo Ive never seen a used ecu reprogrammed to a different car--actually Ive never seen a second hand part reprogrammed to another model.

Its impossible to erase and reprogram with Volvo software as its done through a central server in Sweden that the vehicle has to be connected to the web to interface with and the VIN has to be verified aswell.

However I have heard that there are some companies out there that claim to be able to do it.

For the user with the dodgy ECM--Im assuming its the one up under the wheel arch??

Try se if theres a Ford number on it--Usually a good deal cheaper if you can find the Ford equivalent.

    http://www.competition-parts.de/en/original-files/volvo-original-files.html

According to this one i would need SIEMENS SID803A 5WS40562A-T.

Any Ideas, of where to get one?

    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

I asked same question and was told by Volvo master tech that the only way it could be done was to connect to volvo server in sweden as HELLRAZER has said... I assume that similar technology was used ? I don't mean connecting to main server in sweden.

    Obviously not.

Did he actually reprogam it somehow or just plug it in and hope for the best??

Id also say youre going to have problems if for one reason or another you ever need to get the car on a Volvo diagnostic machine though.

Had same problem with my 05 s40. A friend took out the ecu and cleaned with a carbon cleaner, car working perfect again. He said dirt builds up around that area causing all the faults. Make sure the battery is disconnected when doing this.
