Our technical team have been working on an issue impacting email services since this morning. Some details here: http://www.blacknightstatus.com/2011/11/mailblacknightcom-smtpr1cpblacknightcom-performance-issues.html

    Guys
I'm sure you're working flat out to get this fixed - but I'm sure I'm not the only user who's irritated by your choice of terminology....

    e.g. performance issues, impacting, etc

To my mind, 'performance issues' mean I get my mail, but it takes a little longer than usual. Here, I've had no email at all since 9:04am.

It's broken / stuffed / not working / fubar - choose your own wording -
but 'performance issues' is downplaying it something chronic.

Saying 'it's broken and we don't know why' is more honest - and will win you more support in the long term....

Lads this isnt good enough that a critical part of the hosting - email is down for over 7 hours and no sign of it being fixed anytime soon.

A worry for business people like myself relying on the email to operate a business in an already tough environment.

Surely it has to be a priorty to have some backup system in place from now on, as you have to agree there is ongoing issues with email for months now...

+1 Theres been some problems with their email the last couple of months, maybe not the exact same issue but it has effected day to day email.

I'm getting abuse from clients and frankly its not good enough. Email is a basic and crucial form of communication for any business and there should be backups in place.

Can anyone recommend a good reliable hosting company as I'm moving from these jokers.

    Its now 5 o clock.
My email has been down since around 1 yesterday. Thats a total of 28 hours without email.

Its simply not good enough. I dont care whats gone wrong , or what the issue is. To be perfectly honest, even if your building went on fire I would still expect a contingency plan of some sort. There doesnt look like you have anything like that in place at all.
28 hours without email is what it is, incompetence and ineptitude of the highest degree. When my hosting expires soon I'll be going elsewhere.
This isnt the first time I've had to put up with crap from Blacknight ( the last time was when they cut me and all my clients sites off over 50c outstanding on a bill that no one told me about )

    Fix it.

What a joke this crowd are. 9.00am since I last recieved an email. Why dont you have a backup plan in place? I get an email every 3 mins with and order/enquiry without fail, im lost without it. Luckily I can get my orders through the backend of my website. This is beyond unacceptable, im only pissed that I renewed my hosting last month!

    The most recent entry says
Update: 18:45: Sorry about the delayed response since our last update. We believe we have identified the cause of the issue. We're not sure exactly where the problem lies but we can see some weird network traffic between the NFS server and the SAN. We're in discussions with Compellent now to get them to shine some light on the situation.

We currently do not have have an ETA for this issue (many people have asked).

seriously, this is the worst possible time for my email to go down :( its been a terrible week, went for dinner at the weekend, it was crap, then went to pay, card didnt work, very frsutrated about why i didnt have monies, with the change in me pocket I then went to cinema to see contagion, was terrible, next day found out I all my monies cleaned out cuz someone hacked me visa, all this made me forget my bros birthday, maa on the line giving out about that, thought I just need some love from my gf to ease the pain had a fight with my gf about sex now she aint talking to me, and NOW THIS!

it doesnt take much just to let me know email is down, tried to sign in all day, tried different browsers, different accounts, different computers etc, just frustrating ---- next time just re route webmail to a message that says 'mail down, back soon' and I would be happy just to know that!

    Latest update from Blacknight

    ======================

Update: 21:15: We're instigating a roll back plan to the old mail storage box until we can nail down what is causing the issues on the newer one.

The ETA for mail being back is tomorrow morning on or before 09:00. If this changes we'll post the update here.

I have a high toleration point, but this has gone above the limits, guys. It standard to have email but the whole things down.

To prevent this mail server happening causing problems, Has anybody tried moving their mail servers to Google Apps or simular through MX records? Any other mail server provider to use?

@Blacknight Any chance of a refund? I have had been with you since July.

Our technical team have been working on the mail issues non-stop since yesterday and are still working on them.

Apologies for not replying to this thread sooner

The status post has been updated and will continue to be updated by our technical team as soon as the situation changes.

At present pop email should be working. Some people are reporting issues with IMAP.

SMTP is currently offline and we are advising people to use their ISP's SMTP service (a lot of people would be doing that anyway due to restrictions imposed by the various ISPs)

Hadn't been able to receive mail since yesterday, then received some mail last night, wrote replies and by the time I had them finished, they wouldn't send. Couldn't receive mails again until this morning, but still can't send them

If you're having issues sending please use your ISP's SMTP server

If you get onto support, they should tell you about how to go about setting up your outgoing mail :) If you use thunderbird, I could try help.

It's a setting in your Outlook - google to find instructions.

EDIT - just in case you don't know what to google for - http://www.wiseinternet.com.au/Support/Outgoing-Mail-Server-Settings.aspx

After that, the SMTP setting to put in depends on who you buy your broadband from.

    (list from a hosting company)

    Eircom subscription: mail1.eircom.net
    Eircom free: mail2.eircom.net
    UPC (ex NTL): smtp.upcmail.ie
    IOL Free: mail.iolfree.ie
    IOL Subscription: mail.iol.ie
    Vodafone at home: smtp.vodafone.ie
    Clearwire: smtp.clearwire.ie / mail.clearwire.ie
Digiweb: smtp.digiweb.ie (note: not for use for digiweb hosting)
    Magnet: smtp.magnet.ie
    3: mail-relay.3ireland.ie
    Imagine Broadband : mail.imagine.ie
    Perlico: mail.perlico.ie

You're welcome. Off topic, but if you're interested in moving to Google Apps (where you would probably not have this problem again) which gives you mobile access to your email, great spam protection and a few other bells and whistles, I'd be happy to talk to you about similar jobs I've done for other people. PM me your phone number - advice is free.

    Here's a video about it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJT3pagjd8s

    Email sent out by Blacknight.

    Dear -

If you are using us for email service (excluding Hosted Exchange) then
please read on for some important information regarding changes we
have made to our email systems that may impact you.

Firstly we'd like to apologise to anyone who was affected by the email
service outage earlier this week. Our technical team worked flat out
to restore services as quickly as possible while also updating the
status site as often as feasible.

In order to improve email performance for both POP and IMAP email we
have migrated to a faster and more efficient email service (Dovecot).

As part of this move we are no longer offering "POP before SMTP", so
please ensure that your email software is setup to do SMTP
    Authentication.

Not sure what that means or how to set it up?

Here's some instructions for common email software:
    https://support.blacknight.ie/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=472

and setting it up in Thunderbird:

    http://wiki.blacknight.com/index.php/SMTP_Authentification_in_Thunderbird

Alternatively you could use your ISP's SMTP servers:
    http://wiki.blacknight.com/index.php/SMTP

If you are using webmail we recommend using:
https://altmail.blacknight.com which will give you access to the most
recent version of AtMail webmail which is compatible with all current
    browsers.

    Thanks for your time

I'm using Office Microsoft Outlook 2000 SP-3. SMTP is fairly easy to set up? Relative to setting up POP3 access?

I haven't used SMTP before.. oh well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,740 ✭✭✭mneylon

SMTP authentication is easy to setup in most email software. If you look at the links in the email we sent you it shows you how

SMTP Auth is only for sending - you're still using POP3 to pull down your emails
