iPhone 4S, iPhoto & Photo Stream

So I have a new iPhone 4S. A nice step up from my aging 3GS.

Loving the new camera, but I'm a little confused about the iPhoto importer step vs photo stream.

If my photo stream moves all photo's to my Macbook and then I connect my iPhone to my Mac, do I still need to import my photos or has Photostream that taken care of (once iCloud sync is done). If so, I can just split out the photo stream photos in to their own events. But just wondering are Photostream files real or iCloud representations

Another thing I noticed too is that iPhoto imported corrupted photos (missing colors etc.), but Photostream synced the very same photo's in perfect condition.

    Where't the problem I wonder?

Photo stream just makes all your pictures available for 30 days in photostream on all your devices upto a limit of 1000 photos.

So its not really backed up as such.

Ok, so I still need to import my photo's in to iPhoto. Seems to make a duplicate of them all then which is a bit strange

Yep, you'll need to back them up by importing them from iCloud into iPhoto on your mac. They will disappear off the cloud after 30 days otherwise. It's not really doubling up, because the icloud is just a temporary place for them to sit until you do a proper back up of them. They can be removed from the cloud once you have them placed into iPhoto.

The thing that annoys me about PhotoStream is that you have to upgrade to the newer version of iPhoto (which is €12 from memory), which is a bit of a rip off. Maybe it's worth it if you take a lot of snaps, but for me it's just as handy to sync up when I'm connected, as I only take about 10-15 photos per month max.

You can either import them from Photo Stream or import them from the phone, if you do both you will get duplicates.

Photo stream doesn't have your videos so you will still need to import those from the phone.

As a previous poster says Photstream only keeps a maximum off 1000 photos for 30 days so if you delete them from the phone and don't import them from either photostream or the phone they will disappear after 30 days.
