Rights of CD cars with detectives on the roads?

I am constantly amazed at the speeding by "CD" cars in bus lanes with detectives in tow behind, bullying into lanes, flying across 3 at the last minute and lashing along like lives are at stake. At a time when they are not flashing blues but merely escorting diplomats on normal business between house and work or functions.

What are the rights of these drivers, such as those covering the British ambassador? Do they not have to obey the same laws as us in respect of rules of the road - does anyone have any insight ?

If they are escorted by gardai, I dont think the diplomatic immunity comes into it.

But i dont see Gardai behaving the same way unless their are using their lights and presumably heading for an emergency. Why should they act this way for diplomats just going about business?

Who's going to stop them? Nobody!

The Gardai are, also, not subject to the same rules as the rest of us. They can do what they like.

Is that the JEEP Cherokee? That guy is the worst aggressive driver I have ever encountered as well.

I would assume that if the Gardai are following a consulate car, they are providing protection, and seeing as it would look bad if they let the car off quoting that they were unable to follow due to the nature of the manner in which the diplomats were driving, so I would cut the Gardai some slack there. As for the diplomats, they do not have the right to drive like that , but it is complicated. As for the car parking in disabled spots, well next time just place some nails behind the wheels until he gets the message.

Because alot of their diplomats have a threat level against them due to the country they represent.

They hardly put a unmarked bmw with 3 or 4 heavilly armed detectives following them for no reason.

Our diplomats receive the same in other countries, its the norm. It would be a major international incident if our dancing priest or some other professional protester took a few pot shots at a visiting diplomat.

As Britain said yesterday after their embassy was stormed in Iran, it is the responsibility of the Iranian government to protect their diplomats and it is governed by the Geneva convention.

    Same applies here.

I remember seeing the British ambassadors 7 series in the curragh.

Discrete blue lights embedded in the grille and on the rear window, bulletproof glass several inches thick and runflats tyres worth 2500 euro apiece :D

    Beast of a car

A couple of years ago the Danish ambassador used to get an escort every morning down the bus lane on the N11 - something to do with a Danish cartoonist and a cartoon of the prophet which the world of Islam objected to so the ambasssador was considered at risk.

The British ambassador has had an escort since way back when, well our gallant freedom fighters did blow up one of his predecessors (Christopher Ewart-Biggs) after all.

The actual 'CD' plate by itself doesn't mean anything, the diplomat has to produce a diplomatic passport, otherwise he gets his ass kicked like the rest of us. I've seen several Irish drivers with CD plates, obviously the embassy sold the car and couldn't be bothered taking off the CD plates so they don't really count for sh1t and I don't think the Gardai feel intimidated by them, unless the car has 'CD' plates and is being followed by one of their own.
