Was watching The Thin Red Line the other night and i have to say Nick Nolte's performance was amazing I honestly think he gave the best screen performance ever in movie history, its incredible esp the scene where he lambasts Captain Staros over the phone with his face red and veins popping out of his forehead you'd swear he was right there in the middle of a battle > completely convincing.

and whats disgraceful is that he wasn't nominated for an oscar for it:cool:

I have to give this film another watch...
Didn't really get it when I saw it first, but that was years ago.

He was impressive in Off The Black too.

I'd be very, very surprised if he doesnt get nominated next year for an oscar for Warrior, he's brilliant in it.

Such a weird film, rambles from the sublime to the ridiculous in parts. Loved the part where they are pushing for the hill, as you mentioned, Nolte steals the show from a plethora of stars in that scene. But the touchy feely stuff with Ben Chaplin's letters to and from his missus threw me off, seemed to drag on for ages without any real purpose...

I think the director was trying to portray the contrast of the madness of war and serenity of home life...but like you i felt it went on too long and a bit off putting.

But I thought the dialogue of each characters inner thoughts was well done.

Completely agree, Nolte is amazing. Also consider TRL to be one of my favorite films, far better than Private Ryan which is almost a different type of film all together. Thin Red Line isn't just a war movie, it goes much further than that

    Nolte was superb
And had some good points about all the brass trying to get promoted and noticed.

Blink and you'll miss George Clooney but I liked his lines about the platoon and the lieutenant/sergeant and father/mother

Check out Affliction, probably his best - very hard film to watch

Have to agree - one of the greatest.........took a second watch & a couple of years of maturity from seeing it the first time,to really get it - mr Malick is a true genius as a director!

Yeah you gotta give it another go. Guaranteed you'll think differently second time around.

+1. I thought he was great in the thin red line alright but have to say in Warrior he's taken it up a notch further.

Agree with all of this, esp. the bit I put in bold.

Didn't really get this film the first time I saw but have seen it numerous times since (actually, note to self, must watch it again before Christmas) and it gets better every single time.

You read my mind, one of the few performances I have seen that i would call flawless.

Yeah...totally underrated and over looked movie...Like others I was a bit lost first time watching it, but seen something that made me watch it again. Really loved it after that. Gonna watch it again it's been a while :)

The amount of time tho I've been talking to people about movies and have them tell me about their love for war movies, then give me that blank look when I mention TRL....

Saw Tree Of Life over the weekend - while some of it was up it's own arse the rest was really powerful & seemed to adress so many issue's that we all seem to come up against in life & what a profound effect it can have on people around us.
