I think it's illegal for ROI private sellers to sell a car on UK plates in the first place...

Ye, not sure about the whole thing, I know before on the old system it would have not been an issue.

Seller has paperwrk on the car and full V5C.

Under documentation to bring for VRT
    6) For vehicles imported from Northern Ireland, where the invoice is dated more that 30 days earlier than the date the vehicle is presented for registration, details of where the vehicle was stored. For vehicles purchased in the EU, we require shipping details to confirm the date of arrival of the vehicle in the state. For vehicles outside the EU, we require the single administrative number and the date it was issued by customs at the point of entry to the EU.

Also, if you reckon the person has had it a while, I'd pay attention to this too
    9) For vehicles over 4 years old, an unexpired roadworthiness certificate confirming that an equivalent to the NCT test has been passed. The vehicle will be called for a roadworthiness test (NCT) shortly after registration.

And some info from the revenue.ie website
Motor vehicles supplied by private individuals
Private individuals are not registered for VAT, and do not use vehicles owned by them in the course or furtherance of a business. Therefore, they are not entitled or obliged to charge VAT on the sale of any such vehicles. This applies even where the individual had an entitlement under a special repayment scheme to recover VAT on the purchase of the vehicle (see Recovery of VAT and/or VRT by Purchasers not Registered for VAT). Private individuals resident in the State are not entitled to hold unregistered vehicles. Any vehicle offered for sale by a private individual should be already registered, and VRT should not be an issue.

Basically, the car should have been VRT'd within 30 days of entering the country. I'd walk away and personally I'd be inclined to inform revenue

Had a look thru carzone and noticed several cars on uk plates but then they might not have been in the state that long..

Maybe just bring the car and seller for a roundtrip on the fastferry and sign the papers in hollyhead,, thanks for the answers.

anyone who is not an authorised dealer must book an appointment with the NCTS to re-register the car within 7 days of import and complete that process within 30 days.

Its not impossible to resolve this in this case, but theres a lot of cars for sale so I would go for one where I wouldnt need to jump through hoops

    A disgusting and underhand suggestion.

OP just say you bought it up the North of a private seller, not possible to have any shipping details etc and just do up a hand written receipt and date it recently.

There is not necessarily anything dodgy with a car being sold on UK plates in Ireland everyone was buying and selling on UK plates when there was money to be made its just not as common anymore as there isnt the same money to be made.

Generally everyone seems to be forgetting, that car could have been here in Ireland completely legally on UK plates.

It could be owned by student from UK. It could be owned by someone who moved here only temporarily. It could be owned by someone who was resident here and worked in UK and it was his company car.
In all cases car would be here legally on UK plates.

There's nothing wrong about a UK reg car driving in Ireland as long as the car is insured and the driver is not an Irish resident :)
