My TAX situation.

Right, looking for a bit of guidance on this one.

I am employed by a company but my method for getting paid is by cheque each month and I invoice the company, lodge it etc.

Technically I am down as self employed as its up to me to sort out my own tax etc. Tomorrow I go into the tax office to enquire about this but before I do I thought it might be best to run it by here first as some people might know more about it than I.

A few things I want to find out about tomorrow is
    1. How much tax I have to pay and how I go about paying it
    2. Benefits, since July my hours were reduced and my pay also, essentially I don't earn a great deal, at present i get €1,000 a month, for April, May and June I earned €1,500. So for August, September, October and also November I will only be on €1,000, so I am thinking I may be entitled to some sort of benefits for rent allowance or the likes, or maybe not, I really am totally in the dark with this situation.
    3. The social charge that everyone who earns has to pay, how I go about paying that.
    4. If there is any tax back for me, I worked in retail for 9 years through school and college so I might have something owed to me, although I am aware that it won't be back dated for that amount of time.

I think that is it, if anyone has any advice for what I can do in my situation (other than get a better job, which I am already onto) then please share the wealth of your knowledge please.

    Thanks.

Bit of an update on this.

My PIN for PAYE online came today for me to check my credits etc.

I am slightly confused on it, its back dated to 2007 which is nice, and in Tax Credits section there are 2 highlighted green boxes with the same sum in each one, it says claimed in the box also.

When i click into it it asks me would i like to claim this credit and at the bottom it says gross relieft due, am I fully entitled to all of the sum that it says in the box?

There is guidance on the revenue site as to whether you are to be regarded by revenue as employed or self-employed.

If you are employed, the company must deduct tax.
If you are self-employed you must be registered with revenue as self-employed.

You will not have PAYE credits if you are not an employee.
You must do self-assessed tax returns if you are self-employed.
