I'm likely moving to cork short term and don't know the city that well, can anyone suggest suitable routes for running during the evenings Monday-Friday.

I'll likely be around Donnybrook area.

Also if anyone here doesn't mind me tagging along for runs it would be great. :D

    Check out this thread

    Anywhere to run in cork?

The fact it's getting dark very early now limits the routes somewhat but the Marina mentioned in that thread has street lights. The route I take mostly at this time of year is out the Lee Fields to the west of the city as it's very handy for where I work and again has street lights. See this garmin track for where I mean - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/126421621

Donnybrook is a good bit away from both places unfortunately.

Are there any athletic clubs you can get in contact with? Yellow pages, etc.

    Hi Cabaal,
I don't know if you're male or female, but for ladies there is an excellent meet and train group that meets in Douglas Shopping centre (v v near donnybrook) on Monday nights. Various paces and distances catered for.

Hi Cabaal,Marina area is probably going to be your best bet now the dark nights are in although it is a bit of a spin out from Donnybrook. There is also the 'Straight Road' between Ballincollig and the Mardyke area that a lot of people use in the winter as it is a nice stretch and well lit and then of course for the track running there is the Mardyke and UCC facilities. There is a loop that you can run out of Douglas on the South Douglas Rd, turn right on the cross Douglas Rd and the turn right back towards Douglas on the Douglas rd. (probably best to Google map it :) )Its running on footpaths as the roads can be busy but that is probably your nearest circuit.

Unfortunately around two thirds of the UCC track has been closed for months due to the extension being built on the Mardyke Arena, not sure when it's due to fully reopen so you've only got the straight on one side to use.

CIT has the only other track in the city that I know of.

    Male,
I actually did see info about a meet and train group but when I looked at the details I discovered it was only for ladies. Would have been perfect for what I was looking for otherwise :)

down in rochestown the old railway line..it is a great run along the harbour and you can connect on to the marina also..there is also a run from the rochestown inn to passage..neither are very well lit up but both great during the daylight hours..

Would this be a complete no go at night due to poor lighting?
If I brought a head torch is it reasonable safe? :)

You'd need the head torch but, as far as I can remember, the route is tarmaced all the way into Passage West.

As warder6161 says it's perfect running along there, or back over to Blackrock and the Marina - maybe not so much at night.

They installed street lights along the route to passage - I have not yet ran this in the dark though so am unsure if they have actually been switched on yet. With a head torch it is safe though - the surface is perfect, no potholes. From the car park at hop island I think its around 2 miles along the path to passage.

This is the opening of a new running 'route' in Cork City on the Tramore Rd...not too far away from Douglas (I think thats where you said you would be based).

Apparently its going to be lit and a nice surface for runners - looks like its a 2.5k loop so good for training runs if its accurate.

Is this open to the public or do you have to be a member of a running club or the Mardyke itself?

The latter. With this now open I presume that CIT track will be easier to get on.
