Hi we have a Volkswagen polo 99 we want to trade in against a better car.
I recently took a test drive of a Toyota yaris 99 and just to have power steering was unreal!!
I would love recommendations of a car similar to that but with bigger boot for buggy.
I have seen my type of car going for 900 which is what I bought it for so could i bring it to a garage with 600 extra and get a car for 1500 or how does it work?

First of all you will get nowhere near €900 for a 99 Polo with no power steering.

    Ford Fiesta have large boots.

For a car of that age you're probably better off selling privately - you'll get relatively very little for a trade-in as most dealers are not interested keeping something of that age on their forecourts. And yeah, I can't see you getting €900 for it very easily.

I don't think the Mk. 4 Fiesta had a particularly large boot - IIRC it's smaller than the Polo's. At least with the Yaris the back seats can slide forward or fold flat. Honda Jazz probably has the largest boot in its class but they only came out in '02 and didn't sell very well over here.

A garage will not do you any favours when trading in a 12 year old car for another 12 year old car. They will certainly want more than €600 and your old car. Sell the Polo privately, if in good condition it should be easy to sell being cheap to run.

Also if you are looking at buying a car with a budget of €1500 again I would not bother buying from a garage. Cars of this price bracket in garages tend to be rubbish that was traded in and the warranty that comes with them (if any) is probably not worth the paper it is written on. So I suggest again that you buy privately, you will get more car for your money and you will meet and talk to the owner which is important.

BTW a Yaris/Fiesta are in the same class size wise as the Polo so if you need to fit a buggy then you might want to look at something a bit bigger like a Focus or Corolla.

O I don't know how I would be able to do that as I would be without a car at some point.
Ok so I bought my car only last year in August I thought that was the going rate for those cars? I think I Will advertise it for that maybe a young lad might want it. It works perfectly, I just really want power steering now!
Thanks anyway guys will use the tips of buying and selling privately.

Could I do the scrappage scheme?

Scrappage scheme is now finished afaik although many places are still offering good deals on new cars. I don't think your budget would stretch to a new car either.

Sell privately and buy privately. Oh and keep an eye on the bangernomics thread too! :D

Assuming the Polo is NCT'd until next year at some point, throw it up on donedeal for a €1050. There's no reason why you won't get around the €850 mark for it. They are slow enough sellers without power steering, but they still sell.

If you wanted something reliable, buy a 99 Corolla 1.3 saloon. You should get a decent clean one for around the 1000-1200 mark.

If you wanted to spend a bit more, a 02 Polo would do fine too. They give a bit of trouble with coilpacks, but other than that they're no worse than any other car.

Its nct'd until 2013 and taxed until next year. Maybe it being 5 door will help sell it :-) or maybe I am dreaming..
I think I will save as much as possible and get an updated polo in the new year as I do love it, it just feels very basic after driving the yaris.
    Thank you very much!

Ah Jesus, tested till 13 and taxed I'd hold though for €850, you wouldn't buy a road legal pedal bike for that :P

But do, save up another bit and keep an eye out for a 02 Polo in the mean time. My sister has a 05 and she has plenty of space for a big buggy.

I have a 97 Polo, with no power steering. They're grand yokes, but basic is one way of putting them. :)

Let me guess you got the 999cc engine? If it's the 5 door, you can put down (in my car at least) one half of the back seats so you can fit more in the boot so it extends into the passenger area. If you have one or even two kids, you can still fit in two baby seats (one in the front and one in the back) plus an adult at a squeeze if you place them in the middle.

If I were you, I'd save up for a few months and buy then, and sell your car when you have the new one. They do sell, I should know, I was looking for one long enough! If it was me personally, I'd pay probably... 650 next year for one from 99,if it was spotlessly clean with a bit of tax and NCT. The engines are good in them and they're a doddle to park, and as a final thought; in the price range you're looking at, you could just be buying into something with an expensive bill around the corner.

Don't underestimate the fact that you have a cheap to run, tax and insure car. Even if it is basic!
