id of though it was due on the date the car was first registered, regardless of which country it was registered in?

It's due on the 4th anniversary of the date it was first registered. The country of first registration doesn't change that.

My car is a UK import, it was first registered in August 2008 in the UK then re-registered over here in March 2009 but will be still be due it's NCT in August 2012.

That's true with an exception of cars which were imported at age over 4 years old.
Then car is due NCT on import date, and then every 2 years from that date.
