Moved to Astronomy & Space.. Hope this is OK mods? Seems a better place for this query than Anthropology. ;)

    Hi Karl,

Do a quick search of this forum, and have a look at the FAQ in the stickies.

    Generally:

Buy the most aperture you can afford.
A good telescope mount is important.

After that it depends on what you or your wife will want to use the scope for.

    Eg. Observing, Astrophotography etc.

You can get a very decent scope for €500.

    Clear skies,
    Peter
