Yep, once a season would be the most I'd be able to do though

    Hiya,

heard rumours of this yesterday. I'd travel down, maybe bring a few more WORC riders down, would be good to get racing expanded outside of the usual spots.

As always feel free to ask questions of us who've run races.

See you kids at St Annes in two weeks!

    Greg

De Ronde VC had a casual survey on their facebook page a few weeks ago about it. And Valley Wheelers are also looking into it. It's gaining momentum!

We're looking at two possible venues in the Cork area at the moment. Insurances and red tape are the only things preventing a start. When we have sorted that out (which could take a few weeks or more) a few club riders will have a rattle off it before we consider opening it to riders from other clubs. It's great that there's seems to be a huge interest in it in the south. A place to do it is the biggest difficulty. If anyone here has any suggestion about a venue we'd be happy to hear it.
I ride with De Ronde van Cork CC, and am helping to try to get this scene going. We're closet Flandrians in this club, after all :)

    I'm up for it.

Maybe that guy Rolf (info@waterfordracingclub.com) who got the CX set up in Waterford might be worth a shout? He somehow managed to convince the airport business park management to let him do it. Fair play to him.

Have you tried any local parks? Have a look around and then approach your relevant council. That is what I did. Trying to find the right person to talk to can be tricky at first, but persevere and you will find them.

Definitely be up for it and id know of a 5-10 lads in killarney CC that would go also.

Would be good to hear of clubs in the South/Munster getting together to form a CX league.
As Raam has mentioned, find out who's in charge or either local parks or has suitable patches of land that can be used.

I am sure the new CX Coordinator for Cycling Ireland would be happy to lend advice...
If clubs in Cork/Kerry etc do get a venue and a sponsor etc, maybe run a one off test race in preparation for running a Munster series next year?

    Ballincollig regional Park?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 Quicktwo

I sent a mail to Maciej, the XC co-ordinator as i couldn't find an email for the CX co-ordinator.
Cheers Tenzor07 for the idea. Will keep this updated

I'd consider looking at places willing to host park runs, (Macroom and Clon come to mind) if they are open to that they may be willing to allow a cx race.

How much land would one need for a decent course?
A mix of forestry with grassland?

Anything with a few acres just to get it up and running would suffice. Be nice to get it going this side of xmas.

Course should be between 2.5km and 3.5km. Easily achieved with lots of looping.

    Vernon Mount?

You'd need a mountain bike for Vernon Mount - far too steep (and "jumpy")

Far better off across the other side of the South Ring Road in Tramore Valley Park (the old Kinsale Road landfill). It belongs to the city council.

Its still being developed for its formal opening next year but is already in use and has been variously used for orienteering and as a rally special stage.

Theres a BMX track due to go in there too.

I reckon Ballincollig Regional Park has the rigt mix of paths, grassland, scrub run throughs etc to have apretty good course there. Only issue is with the county council and insurance but you would hope the may be open to these things and find a way to make it happen.

Insurance problem is solved by getting indemnity from CI. It costs about 25 quid. That covers the land owner and no one else.

Max Power, the XC guy got back to me and said that Robin Seymour is the guy in charge of cyclo cross. There is a big CX event on Sunday so he's busy for now. After that I'll contact him

Thats that aspect sorted then, access to all the below then could be a possibility. Plenty of parking out there for those travelling and ease of access from Kerry and Waterford. Don't see why it would'nt be a possiblity.

It took me quite a few months to get the OK from Fingal County Council in Dublin. Not that they were difficult, they were in fact very helpful. The time was spent tracking down the correct person and then checking a couple of different venues to find somewhere that suited the race needs and that Fingal were happy to make available.

Im not in Cork at the moment but it would be divisional services south who ned to be contacted in order to get discussions moving on using the park, if they are as accomodating as Fingal Co Co then it could be a winner.

De Ronde are well placed to contac the right people in County Hall!

If you can approach them and have all your "t"s crossed and "i"s dotted then that is half the work done and makes it easier for them to say yes. Take a look at the CI event guidelines: http://www.cyclingireland.ie/page/events/how-to-organise-a-cycling-ireland-event

For the Crossmarnock and NDCX races series we produced a Risk Assessment which outlined everything that will happen in the build up to the race, during the race and then after the race. The council will be interested in keeping Joe Public happy and making sure there will be no damage to the venue.
