MK4 Golf Speedo Broken

Was driving on the motorway today going around 60mph, accelerated slightly and then noticed the needle on the speedo jump to 80 and back down to about 65 very quickly. After seeing this I slowed down slightly and drove around 60 looking at the speedo and checking if there was anything else wrong. I put the foot down and the speedo went backwards, shot down to about 20mph even though I was doing around 70. It goes back to normal if I keep it at a steady speed but if I accelerate the needle bounces all over the place, twitching and jerking between 20 and 60.

Showed it to my friend earlier tonight at traffic lights, took off gently and then when I got to 20mph I put the foot down and the needle went to 0mph and stayed there until I stopped accelerating.

Not sure what is causing this, the car was serviced about a week and a half ago at my local mechanics, should I take it back to him? Anyone here heard of this problem before?

Could be a faulty speed sensors or the clocks could be fault.

It's like asking how long is a piece of string.

Bring it to a mechanic and ask them to scan the car for faults, see what comes up.
