Just taken a test srive in a 08 one of these.
Its a 1.6 petrol with the dsg gearbox, a bit of an odd mix, as id imagine most dsg's are diesel.
Anyhow, anyone here any opinionon thiscombination.
How reliable are the dsg systems, and how thirsty would it be.
Its priced a lot cheaper than any tdi, and im no longer doing the miles to justify a diesel anymore.
    Your considered opinions please.
    TIA

    Is it?

I thought that was just the 1.4.

It is. Same engine as the early B6 Passats.

It's an FSi engine so it isn't going to hoover fuel. Some where in the 30's mpg wise

Terrible? The engine is old and as you say not very economical. That said, 102BHP is adequate for most drivers and this old 8V engine has an excellent reputation in reliability / longevity

How did you find the test drive, gyppo?

Oh wait, you might be right there. The old 8V lump was probably out of business by '08

08 could be either way. FSI not good TSI good...

That 1.6 8v is still available in some VAG car in some market I imagine! Emissions too high for Europe - slightly bulletproof I hear.
I've a 2.0fsi A3 from new engine never gave me an issue and on a good run ( I drove it to Switzerland and occasionally take it out for a change) it sipped away at the tank when you weren't hammering it.

The dsg needed it oil done other than that petrol+dsg is fine - not as much torque being pushed upon it.
I'm only sorry I didn't buy a 2.0t in the beginning I might actually use the car in Germany and for longer tips if I had although RHD is a bit of a pain!
The 1.6fsi should be fine day to day op

Its the old mpi engine, I'm afraid.

Test drive: The engine is no ball of fire, but it was adequate, and didnt feel that underpowered. It actually sounded very quiet, but that could be down to the cabin soundproofing.
DSG box is sweet. Very smooth (almost imperceptible) changes. Also liked the fact that the tiptronic worked so well, and 6th would be good on the motorway.

Car itself is 08, elegance spec with leather, dual zone climate, 60k kms, mint condition, and might be got for somewhere around 7-7.5k (equivalent spec diesel with this milage will be at least 4k more)
    Hence the temptation.........

The DSG requires regular maintenance unlike most modern gearboxes and also has a Dual mass flywheel which is known to fail. Not reasons not to buy one, as they are a great box, but just things to be aware of.

That sounds like a bit of a bargain at that price considering the spec. The biggest problem with the 1.6 8v is its old school technology. The lack of power relative to the amount of petrol it uses is noticeable compared to more modern powerplants, EG the VW FSI engine. But if that isn't an issue for you then the same old technology is also the main advantage of the 1.6 as it is very simple, reliable and cheap to maintain compared to the more complex engines in other cars.

Was the DSG box fitted to the old 8v unit? I thought DSG was only fitted to the newer FSi engine and the older 8v unit had the old auto box?

Definately a dsg box bazz. Very very smooth, and tiptronic mode very nice too.
Would 35mpg be a reality with this? Mostly rural driving with a small bit of urban.

The old 1.6 is fine bar being a little thirsty. I had that engine for 4 years, never used a drop of oil and never failed to start. the only problem i ever had with the engine was a lambda sensor at about 120k km. With the extra ratio from the dsg it should be more economical as with the 5 speed manual the gearing was far too short meaning it screamed on the motorway.

I'd prefere the old 8v engine. not really any slower then the new FSI's, much more reliable as its very old tech and cheaper to maintain.

The 1.6 fsi in the passat is far from economical either so that shouldn't be a factor.

OOPS. :o Bazz, did a double check on this, and the seller was telling me porkies. Its a 6 speed auto box, not dsg.
However, it was smooth, and im my defence, Ive never driven a modern auto before. (my 85 merc w123 is the only auto i've driven before now).

Looks like its been a big waste of a thread....

    My apologies to all.
