Do I have to tell employer I am looking for work?

I really like the job I have at the min but I don't like the way I am treated. My hours were cut in half 2 months ago and my wages were cut last week. I arrived into work yesterday to find a letter from the boss saying that we are to close the premises 1 hour earlier from now on so that's an extra hours wages a day gone.

I am currently looking for work but I haven't told him as he would probably just let me go and as much as its crap hours and crap wages its better than nothing.

Do I have to tell him also what way would be best to put it on an application they all seem to ask for reason for leaving if I tell the truth will that make me look unloayal and therefore they won't hire me?

Also I don't want to put my boss as a ref. unless I am guaranteed a job as it will be a shock to him if he gets a call looking for a ref. about me is it OK to put ref available on request?

    thanks

No, do not tell him. The vast majority of people do not tell their current employer they are looking for work.

Your explanation sounds fine to me - the hours have been cut and the wages have been cut. I would also add you fear there may be layoffs in the future.

    Yes.

Don't tell him what ever you do, you may find yourself getting a job and by that time the company finds out they may offer you redundcey. Also how did they slash your wages? Unless you agreed to it then that's illegal

We were all given pay cuts. He said that the only way he could stay open was to take a cut he hopes it wont be for too long!! but the way things are going I reckon the shop might close. There was only 3 customers today and none at all yesterday so things look bad.

You do not have to tell the boss that you are looking for another job and are probably better off not letting your intentions be known to anyone in your present job.......word gets back to those in charge by the most unlikely channels.

As you said you can put "refs available on request" and delay it until a definite offer is made and all the information is at hand. Keep it cool and put in your notice with minimum of fuss and try to keep on good terms if this is possible.

You never ever never tell your current employer you are looking for a new job. Wait until the new job is definite (and that means signed contracts, not just getting an offer).
