Running out of excuses to not go running!!

    Hi all,
I’m going to attempt to start a log as I try to get back running. I tend to go through phases of loving it and then less motivated stages like the past few months :o. . . Overall I really enjoy it and love the feeling when my fitness is increasing along with improved times and just the general fantastic headspace that running gives you!

I have done a few 10km races with times ranging from 59mins to 1.06. The last 10km race I did was in June and I did it in an hr and 30seconds (was aiming for sub 60mins so cursed those extra 30 seconds to infinity!!!)
Since June I got preoccupied with college and the stress that went with that ensured I gained a spare tyre also. I have been doing the odd run since June but as time progressed the fitness has fallen badly. A month ago I did a 10km jog in a route I would do every so often (it was gentle but I completed it) and I attempted the same run a few days ago and I had to stop after 35mins and am disgusted at myself for how much I have let the fitness drop:(.

I don’t have a fancy running watch but I generally use gmappedometer.com and then I have a cheap stop watch so always keep track of my distance and time when I run. In the earlier part of the year I was doing 3 and 4 mile runs three times per week with the occasional 6 or 7 miler thrown in. So basically I am very novice compared to some of the people of steel on this thread who are running all sorts of crazy marathons!!! I couldn’t even comprehend doing a marathon at the minute and was in awe of all the folk doing the Dublin marathon on Monday! I have a keen running buddy in the form of my lurcher and he generally trots along happily beside me only occasionally interrupting me for a sniff or pitstop but in general he is good company and at least he doesn't try to make conversation when I'm gasping for breath:D! Like me he has gotton a bit more cuddly lately:P so all the more reason to get back at it!

My initial aim is to get back running 3-4 times a week and to enjoy it (When I say running, I mean very slow jogging and have no doubt grannies on zimmerframes will be zooming past me!!). I’m 5’8 female and reckon I have to drop about 28lbs to get to my ideal weight of 140lbs. Once I am back to regular running I will sign up for some 10kms in the new year-I’m thinking Cupid’s Dash in Feb and The Great Ireland Run in April and from there I would love to keep up the 10kms and maybe even progress to a half marathon but for now that is getting very ahead of myself:eek:!!!!

Best of luck with the running and the log...get back into it bit by bit, and don't risk injury by trying to do too much too soon....
there's plenty of training plans for novices on the net. have a look at www.halhigdon.com

Beat of luck. The first step is the hardest. Enjoy your running.

Thanks Younganne, I've never heard of Halhigdon but those plans really put it into perspective what needs to be done to run a respectable 10k! I am going to try and roughly follow the beginner 10km.

Last week it just didn't happen for me but back on the wagon this week and still shocked at how much my fitness has dropped since June and I wasn't even very fit then:eek:!

Tues and Wed I did the same 2.5mile run and in my defence it has a hefty hill but it took me 29.47 the first day and 29.00 the second day so a wee bit of an improvement:o. I walked both days and did a little cycling too. Then I hit the gym today. Plan to do a gentle walk tomorrow and horse-riding Saturday and it will be fairly energetic so rest again Sun and hopefully get back running next Mon.

I hope to do the AWARE 5mile run Dec 10th! Also heard about the rock and roll half marathon nxt August http://www.rte.ie/sport/athletics/2011/1117/rocknroll_marathon.html

it's AGES away but looks like a lot of fun:)
