I'm toying with the idea of starting a blog, everyone seems to have one it seems. I'm somewhat apprehensive though. Anyone got any advice regarding Blogger, Wordpress or anything else I should know. Are there pitfalls, dangers, sorta want to know the upsides and downsides of having one. It's a lot to ask but nutshells are accepted.

I have a couple of wordpress blogs. i find them very good. i am a teacher so I use them for teaching purposes.
Use wordpress.com as opposed to wordpress.org. ( .org is more for large scale organisations and is more complex).

Wordpress is fairly hassle free, east to use and secure. I dont know too much about the other bloghosts as a user. Among other things I teach schools how to use wordpress for blogging and hosting their school website, so if you need step by ste advice - just ask here or pm me - Its a sinch!

its like an open diary to the world wide web Rube, you just write what you want

its great for communicating whats going on in your head, ideas, opinions etc

but having put that out there, you can become a target for those who dont agree with your views and of course its not policed, its you versus them, no holds barred, 2 submissions or a knock out

I don't write nor read any blogs, nor twitters, nor use Facebook nor any of the "social networking" sites. I don't see the need. If I want to let someone know something, I send an e-mail and use the cc if I want to inform more than one person.

Again, I don't use messaging - I'm too slow on the keyboard!!

Thank you for that, and for the offer of help. If I wanted to store photos would a blog be better than Flickr, Photobucket etc? I'm not interested in advertising my diary as such, mainly photos and records of of things I'm interested in. Too many blogs I've seen are done to death with text and adverts, I'm a simple person with simple tastes and ideas, I would hope I wouldn't attract too much of the bad stuff.

Here are the Wordpress.com themes - you just choose your style - you can change it to another in an instant!
About advertising - there is none unless you want it!. Many people make money from blogs - they use them to host advertising for sites - usually gambling or porn or stuff.
I have never had a problem and I have helped loads of others who have no problem. The odd time ( very odd) you may get someone/ some computer trying to post on your blog - but you get an email from Wordpress asking you to moderate it - you just accept or delete it - its that simple. This has only happened me once - i posted homework for students during the snow closures. Snow must be a code for some sort of gay activity because I got a few messages from gay sites, but they never came up on the blog - i just deleted them. When I removed the word 'snow" then this never happened again!

Also, for pictures - some of the themes are just for images. Here is an example of a school art blog ( its not mine) that is mostly pics.

I'd like to do a Blog on the Camino de Santiago. A sort of daily progress report with pictures and comment as I go along. I intend to start around 1st Apr from Seville if things fall into place. The prospect of updating each evening would help me focus on the thoughts and events of each day.

    Thanks, I'll do that.
As I will be going by bike I will be training beforehand. So I will start the blog with a few local trips to iron out the technical side.

Thanks GV for the link for the themes and I'm going through them. I find them so crisp and clean, I like them, haven't found one to suit me yet but I may not be using the right search word. I'm enjoying looking through them though, lots of nice ones there.

What are these chickens in a cage? I've heard of chicken in a basket, but in a cage? What do they taste like? ;)

The chickens in the cathedral story dates back about 1000 yrs, associated with St Dominic de la Calzada. That church is on the Camino Frances across Ntn Spain. Two chickens, a hen and a cock are still kept in a cage in the church wall.
