    I have google instant predictions & results switched off in google preferences, but annoyingly i still get a drop down menu of results on the google home page whilst typing:(

    is there anyway of turning it off permanently??

    One way of disabling it is to type in "do a barrel roll" as your next search.

    On a serious note,

    That option does not disable the drop down menu,

    it only disables the instant refreshing of results on the page as you type each letter.

    I don't know if you can disable the drop down menu.

    well, it used to...its only recently seems to be giving this error

    You were able to turn it off, but it kept coming back on again... Very irritating, one solution could be using a solution like Noscript to block JavaScript on google pages, but you may loose functionality elsewhere...
