Okay fellow boardsies, I really need yer help. Last year I posted a similar thread about this issue and I got no constructive help so here I am again.

Right, so here's a bit of background. About a year ago, I did something to my laptop that meant it tried to open most programs in Adobe Reader. Still don't know what I did so I uninstalled Adobe Reader and that was grand, couldn't open PDFs but it was a small sacrifice to be able to do everything else. Then last night I really needed to open a PDF for college work and I went against my gut feeling and downloaded Adobe Reader with the intention of getting rid of it again as soon as I was finished with the PDF I needed.

Problem is I now can't get rid of it. It's not in the control panel section for removing software and I've no idea how to get rid of it. Help would be so much appreciated.

    Thanks all in advance.

There should be an Adobe Reader entry in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs/Programs & Features (source). If there isn't I'm not sure. Btw what you did was associate other files with Adobe reader, not the programs fault, it is wise to leave Adobe Reader on your machine as many people use it, it would be inefficient and time consuming to keep downloading and installing it everytime you need to read a PDF.
Btw there are alternatives to Adobe reader but most are not able to handle certain operations only Adobes can, so its wise to use that one, the others (Foxit) also contain annoying toolbars which may install accidentally

Is there a way I can dissociate those files with Adobe Reader? It's not in that section in the control panel, I've searched for it, by title and date installed but nothing. Could you shed more light on it?

What file type are they? Eg file name.what and I can help you, I've no clue why Adobe reader isn't showing (I use Acrobat pro so don't have the reader installed) but look for an icon called Adobe Air, it may have an uninstall option for Adobe Reader!

What OS? in XP, right click a file, choose 'Choose Program', select a program and check 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file'. Hopefully something similar exists in Vista/W7, if you use one of them.

Much the same in Windows 7. Right click on any file, choose 'Open with' and set the default to the appropriate option. Do this for any type of file that is currently set to open with Adobe - except for the Pdf ones, of course :D
