looking for some advice/pointers here from some of you who are well established in this field...

in last last few months my gym work has taken me in the direction of Wendlers 5/3/1 , which i find much more enjoyable than the silly programs i did up till then.

while my numbers are well below the standard i would still like to get involved in powerlifting next year, im looking at the single lifts in feb with the IDFPA

can you guys and gals point me in the direction of what i need to get?
i only want to compete in the unequipped so i guess things like a belt , propper shoes etc.... where is best place to buy?

also as i train on my own and wouldnt know much about it , can you let me know if the 5/3/1 is a good program for adding to my numbers?

5/3/1's pretty sh*t,but if you're only getting started, you could be doing worse.

Compete asap, you'll learn more about your training and how to handle things on the platform the sooner you get on it. You're better making all the mistakes you can while you're relatively inexperienced and don't have a lot riding on it.

You don't NEED anything to compete, you'll see people squatting in all kinds of shoes. I'd recommend a pair of oly shoes tho. Something like Adidas Adistars, Ironwork IIIs or Power Perfects would do the job. ECB @ Ironside are doing a group order of shoes soon per their facebook, you might be able to get it thru them if you want. I think Crossfit Ireland are doing same. Get in contact with both to see, or just wait and order your own whenever!

FWIW, get a good pair of shoes now - I got my Adistars in 2007 and they're still going strong. A bit beat up, but functionally perfect.

RE: other equipment - outside of a singlet you don't "need" anytihng to compete. A good belt and pair of wrist wraps are good training tools to have tho. I ordered all my stuff off Lifting Large when I was competing, but haven't ordered in a couple of years so dunno if there's better deals on offer elsewhere now.

Weightlifting shoes also available in Dublin from this guy I got a pair from him recently, great value, very happy with them and glad to support a local business.

I'm also planning on doing the IDFPAs in Feb as my first comp. It'll be almost a year to the day from when I started powerlifting. Just as the drifter said, I imagine I'll be competing in shorts, t-shirt and cons.

GPC single lifts will be in jan/fev.
Much better comp to aim towards.

As a beginner, don't worry at all.
My fist comp I had a pair of wrist wraps & some chalk, & that was it

Sorry for the noob question but how do the shoes help? Stop you rolling on balls of feet when squat or something?

Pure laziness on my part. Dublin is closer to Dublin than Limerick. :pac:

I bought them based on the advice that they're more stable and it was good advice as it turns out. Your foot is more stable in the shoe and the shoe more planted on the floor. I feel it most when squatting - the wedge shape and solid sole keeps you balanced, with no rolling about at the ankle, which obviously pays off all the way up the chain. Good vfm from what I've experienced so far.

thanks for the reply , i see from your posts that you have a great record in the past , can you suggest a better program than the 5/3/1 ?

tks for the advice on competing asap , i plan to do this alright.
could i use a rowing singlet for the start? id have some of these from my time at rowing.....or are there specific ones?
also in belts , are there specific ones for powerlifting ?

Weightlifting shoes also available in Dublin from this guy I got a pair from him recently, great value, very happy with them and glad to support a local business.

cheers will check out the link for sure

i competed in my first come in idpfa in a t shirt and a pair of shorts and cons....only specialised equipment i needed was a pair of football socks for deadlifting

IDFPA is a great fed to learn the ropes in....GPC Raw is where its at though...

    why football socks for deadlifting??
noob question but what is the difference between idfpa and gpc ?

good , at least i wont be the only noob there so! :)

what are the benifits of wrist wraps? chalk is for better grip on the deadlift i presume?

Usually 4 inches wide, untapered and 9-13mm thick. Depends on how much support you want. After that choose between single or double prong, or lever.

    why football socks for deadlifting??

You have to wear socks deadlifting, health and safety. The bar can cut your shins up, when you have lots of people using the same bar socks rule out blood cross-contamination

noob question but what is the difference between idfpa and gpc ?

GPC allow knee wraps in their 'raw' section. IDFPA does not. Probably more people lifting in the GPC now as a result of new IDFPA rules as of this year but I dont know the numbers

what are the benifits of wrist wraps? chalk is for better grip on the deadlift i presume?

They offer support and can aid grip too. You'll be wanting chalk for all three lifts :)

GPC = no drug testing, IDFPA = drug tested, none = necessarily drug free...

Rowing singlets are fine. Think your Qs are answered.

    Anymore, shout.

you'd want to make sure that they're not double ply. all my rowing singlets (from powerhouse) were double ply from the waist down, apart from one i got from an italian guy at a european regatta. that was the only one legal in the IDFPA when i did my first comp anyway.

While the question of what you're allowed wear is on the table.....is ordinary compression wear allowed? Does it differ between associations?

In my last meet I was just told to cover them up, just make sure they can't be seen.

Rule book is the place to look because it varies.

Generally, you're not suppopsed to, but I don't think you'll get pulled on it unless it's at an international competition. I've asked and been told that UA stuff shouldn't be worn while lifting raw w/ IDFPA, but plenty of people do it and no one cares. There's no added support from it anyway. The rule's only there because the old school blast shirts etc look and wear very like UA gear.

I remember a young lad getting pulled for it at a bench comp in castleblaney one year...
