i use the same itunes account to backup both my iphone and ipad....but i am at 4.1gb used now.
would i be better off setting up a new itunes account and using that for ipad, or would that mess up as it wouldnt match the purchases or whatever ?

I have 2 apple ID's that I use, and it can get messy if you have 2 devices using the one iTunes library with 2 IDs. I've found in the past that when I back-up from one device, if I later sync it but forget to change the ID, I loose the apps from the device that I might have bought under the other ID.

With iTunes you can set up 2 different music libraries, so if you have 2 people using your MAC/PC, then you can open iTunes so that you don't see the other persons music. I presume you can do the same for apps, but I'm not sure. If you can do that, then it would save you the hassle: use 2 apple IDs and keep seperate libraries on your computer for each.

Here's a link about how to use multiple libraries on iTunes:

You can use one Apple ID for purchases and another for iCloud. So, yes, you could use a different iCloud account with your iPad while still using the same Apple ID for purchases. This is what people with old Mobileme accounts have to do. It works fine, but Apple don't really recommend it as it may get confusing.

However, instead of doing this, I would recommend you go into Manage Storage in iCloud settings, find out what is using all the space and simply deselect certain apps from syncing their data to iCloud.

I think apple are working on a solution so you can combine multiple apple accounts into one.

Merging accounts would probably create more problems than it would solve. I think Apple have facilitated people with multiple accounts as best they can.
