Hi there, i'm a sixth year student and am very interested in this above course. I looked through this forum and could not find a thread so I said I'd start one!.

Could anyone who is studying this course give me an insight into it?. Is it interesting / boring?. How many hours is it a week?.

I would be interested in doing Business and French as my Arts subjects, I am not fully decided on whether I wish to pursue a career in Law or Teaching so I think this would be the best course to keep my options open!.

And about NUI Maynooth its self, what is the college like?. Is it nice/ well kept/ good atmosphere etc..

Any replies would be greatly appreciated guys! Thanks!

    :pac:

    Hello!
I finished my BCL last year, with Law and French, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
When I was in First year I did Contract, Constitutional and Admin but AFAIK that's changed this year, and first years now do Contract and Criminal.
I could be wrong on that, though.
There are four hours of law lectures per week in first year, plus tutorials.

Just out of interest, if you want to do business, why the BCL and not the BBL Law and Business?

Maynooth itself is a fantastic college. You'll be hard pushed to find another as welcoming or friendly.

There's more information on the law degrees in the college here and here. The threads both talk about the LLB and the BCL, so you should have a look through them.
And attached is the Golden Thread Student Survival Guide, designed for first year law students to help them a little in adjusting to college.
    Any other questions? :)

I'm fairly sure that that's only for the LLB but I could be wrong too!

OP I'm on my phone so I can't do a detailed post atm but I'll try post one soon! I'm currently a third year law and history student in work placement this year.

If you're really unsure I'd recommend going the Arts route so you can always drop law and continue with business and French if you really want to!

Or if you prefer business I'd look into the law and business as how so Joe recommended as you will still get to do both French and business in first year anyway

Thanks 'How so Joe', I just have a few quick questions to ask if you don't mind answering them for me!.

What is French like in College?. I doubt i'll get an A in Higher French, but I would be aiming for around a B2. Would this be a high enough standard to attempt French in University?.

I'd rather go the BCL Route I think as although I want to study Business, I love languages and would like to give French a go to see how I get on!.

So Maynooth is nice?. I'm heading up to the Open Day on the 26th of November but I think i'll like Maynooth by peoples accounts of it! :)

Thanks also 'McrBaby', whenever you have time if you could post your account of it that'd eb great! :D

French in college is good. in first year you study French poetry, french plays, films, culture and a lot of grammar. Never, ever skip the tutorials, they're hugely important.

to study French you need a HC3, I think, but if you're aiming for a B/A you should be fine. I got a B1 in the Leaving in French, iirc.

Maynooth is indeed as nice as they say. It's a really, really great college.

Sorry to butt in, I don't do law but I do do (do do :pac:) French. I only got the basic entry requirment of a HL c3 in French in my leaving and I've found University level French grand, it's taught differently and focuses on different techniques than LC level does. Once you have a good grounding in grammar and verbs and written expression you'll be grand!

Thanks very much! And you didn't find it that difficult in College?. That's good! I do like French a lot so hopefully a passion for the language will aid me in learning it! How did you find NUIM as a college?

Nah not difficult at all. Challenging but once you put the effort in and do the work it's easy to keep up and you'll quickly improve. I'm in my 4th year here, one of which was spent studying in France and love it still. I love Maynooth. Love it. So so glad I came here.

    As Promised!

I love Maynooth. Absolutely love it. The best decision I ever made was going there. It's nice and small and everyone is really friendly there!

The law dept are great as well. Always willing to help anyone out and work with their students. I also got the chance to do an amazing internship thanks to them so that's a real plus for Maynooth that not many other law courses offer.

I defo don't find law boring and in fact really miss college and lectures this year!

I tend to write better when given questions so just let me know what you wanna know! :)

As you are not sure about Law you can always go through Arts (MH101) although there are admition requirements to continue law. I did that even thou I had the points for Law and Arts. But the good thing is thay you can drop out of law after firsst year if you don't like it.

    P.S. I'm doing French as well :)
