Openvpn under PCLinuxOS

I have recently installed PClinuxOS but cannot configure an OpenVPN connection as the OpenVPN package is not installed and it does not seem to be in the RPM.

I've searched and found a source RPM but cannot manage to add it to the RPM list in synaptic.

Does anyone have any instructions as how to install OpenVPN in PCLinuxOS?

Openvpn is in the PCLOS repository.

Thanks but which one? In Synaptic Package Manager I have the Heanet repository enabled but it doesn't seem to be in there. I've also tried a few of the others in the list but haven't managed to find it.

There is only one reason I can imagine why you cannot find the package ....... you may be using the test ISO of the 64 bit PCLOS which has not been yet released.

The packages are still being built for the 64 bit so the repository is about half full presently.

Otherwise for the official released OS, openvpn is in the Heanet repository as well as the others.

    regards.

You are probably right I downloaded the latest 64 bit ISO. I can manage without it on the laptop for a few weeks hopefully it will be there before I need it.

I have everything else set up as I want it so I don't really want to reinstall if I don't have to.

All I can say is that building up the repository is a slow and it seems sometimes a painful task :D

Hopefully that is one of the apps that gets added before you need it.

    regards

OpenVPN is now in the rpm as is jitsi which includes a softphone which connects perfectly to my Blueface account.

OpenVPN didn't connect when set up from the PCC interface but just needed a small tweak to the conf file.

I can connect remotely using RDP or VNC over an encrypted VPN connection to everywhere I need to

ALL in all I'm very pleased with the 64 bit version, it's quick lightweight and so far does everything I want it to.

I haven't tried connecting to a remote MSSQL server yet but it shouldn't be any trickier than with Fedora.

Seems the 64 bit repo is about 2/3 full now ....... quite a lot of progress it seems.

Glad to hear your needed package got added quickly ;)

I don't like Jitsi ...... I tried it on the 64 bit and then the 32 bit installs and just could not warm to it at all.

It was sluggish to register on start and failed to register accounts at other times. So for me, although I have left it installed to look at again, Linphone is far far better.
I only needed a VOIP phone so anything I might be missing from not using Jitsi is not a factor.

    EDIT:
As I don't know if you are a long time PCLOS user or not, I thought I would mention that as it is a type of 'rolling release' you are expected to completely update ALL packages on an ongoing basis. Using any other method, such as selective updating can cause problems with out-of-sync packages.

    regards.

I also only need voip so I'll give Linphone a go and see which performs best.

This is my first exposure to PCLos but I am checking for updates on a regular basis.

Thanks for all the advice. I quite like the idea of ongoing development coupled with a clean look and install the bits you want rather than an all singing all dancing distro.
