Thought someone here may find this useful for getting some Lidl Instruments for someone for xmas. They go on sale on the 10th November. I'll let the others here say if the Lidl instruments have a good rep or not, as I never got one myself from Lidl.

Anyone here know would the ukelele be suitable/sufficient for a beginner or should I get something better?

+1 have always wanted to learn to play the Ukulele.

Doesn't look too great. I had one before and it never stayed in tune.

Will be picking up a few stands however

The problem with those guitars and ukeleles (in my experience) is they wont stay in tune. They'd put a beginner off from playing tbh.
I have a guitar stand from them - it's sturdy enough to trust your guitars to. Doesn't fold down well for gigs though.

To be honest, I've never played a cheap uke that stayed in tune well. Usually you have to tighten up the tuners with a screwdriver to stop them from varying wildly in pitch.

If you can stretch to a 50-100 euro mark for a starter Uke you'd be much better off. Dublin Guitar Centre are good and have a big selection of ukes, there's a solid topped Laka semi acoustic for 79 which would be many many times better than the plywood offering in Lidl. Like a lot of things, you gets whats you pays for. I was thinking of getting one of them Lidl ones to make a cigar-box uke out of as a project, but I'd be dumping the body or making a bird box out of it.

Any chance you could supply the reasoning by which you formed that opinion? Is the brand not supposed to be great? Have you played any of these instruments before yourself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭Faing

The best cheap starter Uke in the world is the Mahalo U30G, it can be bought in almost any music shop and at around 25 euro is the best value on the planet. Add a set of Martin or Aquila strings (around 8 euro) and you are away with the mixer. There are thousands of uke websites that have resources for learners too, so buying a book and cd isn't necessary.
    Check out this short video.

FSV on upper William st in Limerick have a fair selection of soprano ukes btw

I'm all for never writing anything off without reasonable experience or first hand reports and things, and I'd usually never just hands down assume something isn't any good at all - but don't buy guitars in supermarkets :pac:

I've played them and worked on them. They are not good, they are also not a "brand". Lidl get a factory to produce a few thousand guitars for peanuts, it doesn't make them a brand. I'm not saying don't buy one, I'm just saying don't be surprised that what you get in an electro acoustic guitar for €79 is no good

I bought an acoustic guitar in Lidl about 2 years for the same kind of money. As you say it is not a top quality guitar, stays in tune alright but the tone is not good, particularly when amplified. On the other hand it is a very excellent guitar for slide, crappy guitar with old strings is best for slide.

The wood used on those type of guitars wouldnt be good, and the action wouldnt be good at all.If you were looking for a guitar to learn on,it would be better to look for something like a yamaha F310,about 150 euro, but you get a good start up guitar for that price in my opinion.

I am also a big Yamaha fan, I have an acoustic, and an electric guitar, a guitar amp and a keyboard made by Yamaha. I have nothing but praise for them. The Argos Yamaha guitar sells for 150 and can be found at
    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5400674/Trail/searchtext%3EGUITAR.htm

I use a Martin guitar for solo gigs but I also gig with a three piece Americana band and for that I use a Chinese made Fender I got in Argos for 240. Good guitar for the money.

You could restring it upside down, which is what my daughter done.

Or try this, like the great Elizabeth Cotton and just learn to play it upside down

Gruff Rhys of SFA too

Also, that means you can share guitars with your right-handed mates! Though that bypasses all the fun of going to a session and spending half an hour trying to figure out how to play Fake Plastic Trees upside down after cans... :P

bought a Ukulele for the laugh, and a guitar stand. the stand wasnt bad at all for 9.99. the Ukulele wont stay in tune, after a minute of playing its a mile of tume. To be excepted though at that price though, the worse machine heads ive ever seen. still im having fun messing around on it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭Faing

ukes generally take a couple of days tuning and retuning till the strings settle down. You can also try giving the machine head screws a tweek too.Had a look in Lidl at them ukes and tbh they don't look very good value for money and sounded just like a ten shilling uke should sound...... but keep practising on it, they are addictive,
