No product key on a sticker underneath the laptop? Then you could use a free program called belarc advisor to find the key ( and everything else about your laptop too) problem is that if it's an OEM key (factory installed ) it won't activate when it's manually entered.

Generally you will get an OEM Windows license with factory laptop and computers.
What this means is the License key is tied to the motherboard.
What that means is, you don't actually need to type in the license key when installing WIndows, it will pick up the license key automatically.

The only thing you do have to be careful about is the OEM license key you got with your laptop will only work for that version of Windows. So most likely you will have gotten Windows 7 Home Premium, so your license key will only work for that version of Windows. The license key will however work for both 32bit and 64bit of the version.

If you don't have a recovery partition or a Windows disc you can get a clean install of Windows by downloading a legal iso of Windows and burning it to a CD or make a bootable USB(google for the steps) and install from it.
You will find all the versions of Windows 7 here, all are completely legal. Make sure to get the same version as you already have so your license key will work with it.

i wonder will it pick up the key automatically? The reason I ask, is that I'm in a situation here today where I have a netbook with with a dead hard drive and the windows 7 starter key is worn off the bottom. If I load up my own copy of windows 7 starter 9with new drive) will it automatically activate without the need for me to enter a key?

Hold Alt+F10 when you see the Acer logo immediately after powering on. This should boot the recovery partition if it exists. I'd be highly suspicious if there's no COA on the base though.
