There are softpoints available, aye. Can't think of a classic rifle chambering off the top of my head without hunting ammo loaded for it. Certainly not any common ones.

ive fired the lee enfield .303 and theres some rap of it
id say it would do some damage to a deer if you
    hit bone etc

    I used a swedish Mauser 6.5x55.
Hornady load a .303 ballistic tipped round. A south african friend used a.sporterized LE in SA hunting besbok.

I only ever fired .303 at Targets.
Short enough to use stalking but the best period scopes are German, but purists would only use orig.

I had a Tasco scope on my Swede, not the best scope, but shot Deer with it before I upgraded to a more practical stalking rifle.

    I'd prefer a Garand .308 myself

Did you ever consider just using Irons, Tac?

I did at first, however my accuracy with a Blade type foresight was poor at 200 yards.
I'd buy another Milspec rifle, but not for stalking. Very fond of the rig I have now.

I posted a pic a while back of my Mauser and a nice Pricket

Depends whats meant by vintage. I don't have moderators on either of mine so whenever after Sika round Dublin I borrow a friends 6.5mm, a 1908 Karl Gustav M96 Mauser.
But at first glance looks does not look its age as is one of a shipment sporterised by Kimber about 15 years ago, shortened barrel and polymer sporter stock, bolt angled from original straight to allow a scope and moderator fitted afterwards. Did my HCAP with it also, still every bit as accurate as many factory hunting rifles available today.
