Fees due now!

I, like many others I guess, received a letter and an email from the fees office asking for fees to be paid by 14th of this month.

As a minimum, they are looking for the €224 student levy, which is fair enough. However they're also looking for 50% of the remainder of the fee, which I suppose is the registration fee and tuition fees.

I received the grant last year, and should again this year. I also haven't been in third level education before this, and so are eligible for free fees.

However the thing is Galway CoCo, tell me it will be another few weeks before I will hear back regarding my grant application.
I'm a bit concerned that NUIG are going to start demanding money before I have a letter from Galway CoCo, which going of last year could be some time in December.

I will be able to pay the student levy, but there's no way I could pay the other fees, even if they were to reimburse me later.

Does anybody know the craic with this?.

I thought if you received your grant last year, it meant you automatically didn't have to pay fees this year (bar the student levy). Check your CASS account to see what you owe.
If the 2,000 reg fee is coming up, go into the fees office and tell them that you got the grant last year (there should be a record of this in their system since you were exempt from the reg fee last year as well). They should sort that out for ya.

i got the letter and email back in august (?) but i just had to pay the €224 levy.

    Checked CASS.

Under the Financial details tab the statement shows a €7492 debt,(€1500 reg fee + €5992 tuition?).
However under the Pay Fees tab only the €224 is showing up.

So despite the threatening letter, hopefully they'll only be hunting me down for the student levy!.

Financial details will always show that huge figure until i think its sometime in January when the government clears it. You just ignore it and pay whatever it is you have to pay, which in your case is 224.
So just pay 224 by the 14th of November and don't worry about this at all

^^what he said. Can confirm that the registration and tuition fees appear in my Financial Details as well but nothing is owed in Pay Fees (€224 already paid for me), so you've nothing to worry about :)

I would say go into the fees office to see what that's about, but maybe you don't want to paying the €224 if there's a mistake on their part :pac:

I havent paid any of my fees yet. It says on the CASS account that my "total course fee" and "fees due now" is E5822. I'm not receiving the grant but I cant remember the fee ever being this big!

I'm just wondering can someone please tell me what is the minimum amount I have to pay before the 14th of November deadline? Don't want to have to deal with the fee's office as they seem to be generally useless! (asked for the Bank Giro to be sent out 3 times, never happened!)

Is that in Financial Details or Pay Fees on your CASS account? (see image)
If it's in Financial Details, pass no heed of it, but if it's coming up in Pay Fees, you'll need to go into the Fees Office to see what it's about. You mightn't be eligible for free tuition fees (which is the ~€5,800 sum) if this is the case (eg non-EU student)
Whatever comes up in Pay Fees is the amount you have to pay (€224 for grant holders, €2,224 for non-grant iirc - for first time students anyway)

See here about the minimum amount to pay.

That figure is in both the Financial details and the Pay fees sections.

For the previous years all i've ever paid was E1,724. Then, as is my understanding, the government used to pay the rest of the amount..?

Yes i am an EU student, I'm irish.

I just don't really understand this pay half now and half later thing  If i want ot pay my fees in entirety now, how much should i pay?

Thanks for replying so soon btw! :)

The government do pay the tuition fees (which is debited/credited to your Financial Details in May sometime).

the only thing i could think of what's happened is if you've changed course codes (say 1BS1 to 1BS4 etc), that the system hasn't transferred your fees over (happened to me this year). You have to go into the fees office and ask them to update your information...did it no problem for me.
Also if you're repeating the year, i think you have to pay reduced fees (not fully sure on the amount)

I'm a bit confused by the whole fees payment thing as well. This was sent out in an email in August (my edits are in bold).
    Levy:
Student levies (currently €224 for all full time students and pro rata for all part-time students) must be paid in full before 31st October 2011 (changed to 14th Nov)

    Fees and Contributions:
    - Student fees and contributions may be paid in full before 31st October 2011 (changed to 14th Nov)
    or
    - 50% of fees and contributions may be paid before 31st October 2011 (changed to 14th Nov) and the balance paid before 31st January 2012
so i think you pay the €224 by the 14th, along with the €1,000 (half of the student contribution), and then the remaining €1,000 is paid by 31st January. (If you also have tuition fees, it's half now and half in january then)

I think it's best just to go into the fees office, cos they'll be able to clarify it for you. Go into them in person, they do be a bit slow with emails sometimes.

I did repeat last year if that makes any difference? please tell me i dont have to pay tuiton fees this year because of repeating last year?!?! but i havent spotted any change in course codes

Yea i'm pretty sure it's a mistake on their part in relation to the E5,822 amount due on my CASS account. I'm just going to pay the correct full E2,224 amount due, don't really have time to deal with the fee's office.

Thanks for all your help! :)

if you repeated last year (eg did 2nd year twice, now in 3rd year) you should have had to pay at the start of the repeat year afaik. it shouldn't affect you now. i'm only guessing here, i've never had to look this up.

I don't think it'd be wise to just forget about it. You don't want to be stuck with a €200 late payment fee due to an error on their system. though any time i've been into the fees office, they've always been helpful. it'll only take a few minutes to sort it out if there's an error in their system. You'll be saving yourself an awful lot of grief later :)

just on the subject of fees i paid the €224 online last week, i am in 4th yr and receive a grant. but i never got any receipt for payment thought when I go into CASS and the pay fees section it says no fees outstanding. i know it's silly to be stressing and i can't remember whether i got a receipt in other years. just its a lot of money to pay online and get not receipt. anyone else pay online? is it normal to get no receipt?
