Audi power seat adjuster only works in bursts

A6 Quattro, '98, all electric seat adjusters. During heavy rain some water got in through the driver's side window (fecking window picked that day to stop closing fully but I am fairly sure that's a different issue). Anyway, a few minutes later, I felt the seat position change slightly by itself a couple of times, like it was going a little bit haywire. Since then, the adjuster switches only seem to work in bursts, i.e. I press and hold the switch, and there's a delay, then the seat moves a little and stops, another short delay, then it goes again. I can get the seat to where I want it eventually but it's a pain. Any ideas where to start with this? I am presuming the water caused the problem but I don't know for sure. I was going to remove the covers for the motors and look for moisture, maybe spray in WD40?
