Heading to Spain for the weekend and was wondering if anyone had any experience of caching maps so i don't have to use data for finding my way around? is there much of a limit, could you cache the majority of a city etc?

I'm on 3 and they don't have a short term dealing on dat roaming, and from a bit of research it doesn't seem like I could buy a pay as you go sim over there which i would love to do with regard to all the review, suggestion apps I have on the phone.

I use mobile atlas creator on my computer to generate a map upload it to my phone and use rmaps to view it, there might be a better way but that's what I do. Should be tutorials for both online.

I have cached maps for a destination abroad, they cache fine

However you can maps to view your location fine
but google nav does not work, unless you switch on 3g

The google maps cache will only cache a 10 mile radius also, its probably plenty if your staying in a city.

But as mentioned above it wont allow you use navigation or you cant search the map.

Still handy if you do a bit of prep work and set your hotel as a star on the map, and a couple of the sites as well and then use it to find your way around.

cheers, have had a bash at that and seem to have got it wrong.
downloaded the file area (sqllite file) and dropped it on my phone in the rmaps/maps but it doesn't see it.
One for the future when i have time

You can download OpenStreetMap maps via the app MapDroyd. That doesn't do navigation, but will at least tell you where you are which is half the challenge.

you can install navfree if you want free maps
    http://getsatisfaction.com/navmii/topics/new_android_testing_version

the google map caching also works fine, check your settings to see how much space its taking up

You have to go into Menu > More > Settings > User Defined Maps > YourMapName and enable it then go to Menu > Maps and choose YourMapName

i think long and lat only go up to 180 or -180
you also put north(+)/south(-) first and east(+)/west(-) second
