Paying rent at home, looking for tax relief

    Hi there

I'm paying about €500 in rent to my mother who is owner of the property. I was thinking of applying for rent relief before it's phased out, but I'm wondering does this have any implications for her if I do apply?

    Thanks

Yes. She is chargeable on the rental income you are paying her. She would have to register as a self assessed taxpayer and complete tax returns every year. Depending on her tax rate, she will have to pay either 20 or 41% tax on this income, plus the USC.
