Good luck to Martyn Irvine, Caroline Ryan, Sinead Jennings, Ciara Horne and David O Loughlin who are all competing at the track world cup event starting today.
Carries qualifying points for the Olympics so a crucial event for all.

Martyn Irvine 7th in the omnium flying lap in Astana, 7th in the points race and eight overall after the two events. 24 riders in the field.

Anyone know what happened to Martyn in the Omnium? - I see he has a DSQ next to his name

EDIT - found it - he was disqualified for taking too long to come out of the race after being eliminated in the elimination race. His appeal failed

Having seen the liberties some of the riders in the Europeans took staying in for way too long, I'm guessing they decided to tighten up this time, and unfortunately it looks like Martyn is one of the first to fall foul of this rule

    Disaster..
He was adjudged by the commisaires to have not withdrawn quickly enough after being eliminated in the devil.
The bikes have a red light which flashes after being eliminated. Martyn thought he had passed the last guy on the line and couldn't look down as was in a tight bunch. Under UCI rules he was disqualified not only from the devil but also from the entire omnium.
CI appealed but it was not upheld.

Heard about Martyn this morning. I'm not good with UCI rules and points etc, but how do his Olympic hopes look now, or are they affected at all?

It's a big blow - he gets no Olympic qualification points from the event (he would have got 10 just for completing the event)

In the Omnium Ireland were 25 points behind Russia, who only picked up 10 points over the weekend, so little damage there. They were 35 points behind Denmark, who picked up 160 points for a 5th place. The Netherlands were 43 points ahead and picked up 40 points for an 11th place. Fortunately Belgium only picked up 10 points, putting them 118 points ahead. I don't think he's dropped any places. I think he needs to pick up 3 places to qualify, which would mean overtaking Belgium

To do it he will have to do well in all 3 remaining World Cup events as well as the World Championships in Melbourne. A lot of the big teams will not send riders to every event, which means he perhaps has a better chance of some of the big points (300 for a victory), but the other nations fighting for a place will almost certainly be sending their riders

Having said that, if he could get a couple of decent places (top 8 gets 100 points or more) he can get himself back in the running (a 7th place over the weekend may have just about got him into the final qualifying place)

Thanks for setting that out Beasty. Am disappointed for himself and the ladies, I guess at least there's a few more shots at it in there before the Olympics.

Olympic Omnium rankings after Astana (European places in brackets):

    1. GBR 1,460 (1)
    2. NZ 1,370
    3. AUS 1,110
    4. CAN 930
    5. GER 920 (2)
    6. ESP 833 (3)
    7. ITA 800 (4)
    8. COL 730
    9. KOR 700
    10.FRA 603 (5)
    11.DEN 580 (6)
    12.POL 560 (7)
    13.BEL 503 (8)
    14.NED 468 (9)
    15.RUS 420 (10)
    16.IRL 385 (11)

That puts Martyn/Ireland 118 points behind Belgium in 8th place

To put it in perspective, a World Cup victory is worth 300 points, and a World Championships victory 500 points. 5th place gets 160/200 and 8th place 100/140, so there are still plenty of points to go for, but Martyn needs to be on top of his game in the remaining events (when a lot of other nations will be battling for Olympic qualfication). Anyway, I think he's shown he has the ability. The next event in Columbia starts on 1 December.

Any updates on how Caroline Ryan is doing?

Ireland are 30th overall, 14th in Europe in the Ladies Omnium with only 56 points - France are the 8th European team with 603 points, so it's not looking too good for Caroline

Things are a little better in the Ladies Team Pursuit, with Ireland 18th overall (219 points), 10th European. I'm not sure how many European teams get into the pursuit, but Russia and in 8th place with 747 points, so again it's looking like an uphill struggle

EDIT - there are only 6 European places in the team pursuit
