Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJDS)

    Hi

I know the title is quite a mouthfull  I was lying on my stomach on Tuesday, talking, when my jaws just felt out of synch, like the bottom one had popped out on the side. I lifted my head, this put the jaws back into position, but I was left with misaligned teeth (gap in the bite)

I visited my dentist who said that it was a condition called Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome, something quite common and not serious but annoying. I'm a clencher and I'm currently waiting for a bite guard to alleviate all symptoms linked to clenching, including this TMJDS. Hopefully, this should sort itself out within weeks

In the meantime, I feel like my whole face is scrunched up and tense, and that my bottom jaw is hanging down which of course is not the case when I look in the mirror. It's also difficult to eat, sleep or talk

Has anyone experienced this and what were the outcomes? Any tips? Exercises I could do to speed up the process and ease the tension in my face / mandibular joints?

    Thanks a lot

Yup - been there feel the pain.
In my case I can go with constant headaches for weeks at a time.

Get that mouthguard - hopefully it will help.
Maybe even see a specialist - I spent some time going to the Dental Hospital.

They did show me a set of massage points that have been more helpful than the guard - make sure someone shows you those.
Also stay away from chewy foods at least for a while (or ever) - um - so steaks etc bad - I love my steaks.

Anyway - you really do need to get some professional advice - my dentist was great but the dental hospital with those pressure points really helped me get to a point where I can at least manage or relieve the pain alot faster.

Thanks Taltos, I'll contact the Dental Hospital. I didn't know you could attend there as a public patient

I think my dentist initially referred me - wait time was cruel though - by the time I made it I had learnt to live with the pain and the headaches so was no longer really noticing them. Not sure about calling yourself - but try it.
